Anyway. I think it's interesting. XD //Tangent, sorry.

Want to know something funny? I watched DBZ in college so I know exactly what you're talking about. :) And yes, Lucy and Jack's parallels are deliberate.

I feel stupid, but what are two things that make up the "both" that Jack can have? Torchwood and Ianto? Love and security?

No, no, don't feel stupid. I left this very open to interpretation. For me, Jack was looking for love, a lasting love, but always thought because of the way he is, it would be denied to him. He also wanted acceptance of what he was, but to be accepted as immortal, he was sure love would be denied than because who could love a fixed point? -raises hand- LOL

you don't patronize your reader with simple summaries of the characters' inner struggles or emotions, so when I don't know what I'm supposed to get I KNOW it's a me thing and I'm usually afraid to ask. XD

A friend of mine (who steered me towards using the flashbacks) summed it for me the best: "readers aren't stupid. You could draw your fic with the 16 Cauola box, but readers' imaginations redraw the story with the deluxe 256 Crayola box. Trust the readers to draw their own brilliant conclusions."

:)

As someone who got into DBZ late in life, I was pissed that with all the interesting stuff in there, at no point did the "bad guys" win or have good things happen to them. Vegeta shouldn't always be second just because he's not Akira's idea of the ideal hero. /rant over.

Lol we could form a "I love a fixed point" club.

Very good way of describing it. The crayons DRAW the point COLORFULLY. (I'm sorry.)

So I already read the second part up to the transition. I FAIL at self control. Iwannaknowwhathaaappens.

Rather off-topic, I know, but I kinda feel like meta right now (anything to distract from writing up traffic offences):
Sometimes I think that Vegeta himself doesn't want to win. If he won everything always, then where would his challenges lie? He needs somebody else to set the bar for him to meet and then beat - but when he beats it, he needs there to be the next challenge to discover and face.
Possessed!Vegeta is still like that, but he has less to hold him back, because suddenly he's not worried about the next benchmark.

On the other hand, he's a better father than Goku is; Goku leaves outright (and then dies, but that's something else); Vegeta sticks around, takes an interest in his children's training and continues to be interested (and surprised). And he chose Bulma, who is one of the smartest female anime characters out there. The one who sticks with her is the one who recognises her mind, not her body. Never mind that he's probably got a longer lifespan if he doesn't just die outright, he fell in love and stayed with her.

Actually, it IS kinda Doctor Who meta! The star of the show is always jumping about and can never be tied down (maybe because for so long he WAS tied down to one spot), and he's clearly a hero, because he rights wrongs everywhere; the truly heroic people are the ones who stay behind and right wrongs, but also love.
Sarah Jane loves Luke and his friends, she loves K9, she loves her nephew, she loves Harry, she loves the Brigadier, she loves Earth from Britain, to Canada (she's got an Ontario license plate on one of the walls of her attic), to the entire world; she would have eventually asked to stay behind if she'd continued travelling. When the Doctor offers again, she declines. Sometimes being a hero means staying and doing everything in your own power, with friends to help.
Mickey Smith loves Rose, he loves his family, he loves the city whichever dimension that may be, he loves the idea of being in love, and he loves both Earths, and he finds he has to internalise a lot and let go of a lot - when we meet little Mickey, he's playing in the park and having a joyful time with his mum, and she disappears and he knows something's wrong and runs for the church (and he's rather well-dressed too - I want more backstory on him!). He loves, but he's not stupid. And sometimes being a hero means that you have to turn away, and fight back at another time.
Jack loves Ianto, who represents stability - he's peace. He also loves the Doctor, who is movement and time travel and everything Jack has ever known or seen. More than the Doctor, but less than Ianto, Jack loves the idea of constant movement. He's a fixed point now, but before he would flit about the cosmos, in much the same way as the Doctor did. And sometimes being the hero means staying where you are, even if it hurts.

Well, that was a long and rambly comment! Now I think I can tackle that traffic assignment. Cool.

I agree that he doesn't want to win ALWAYS, and I think the writing set him up as someone who had accepted losing because "Kakarot was the best" but I still think that the fact that he was only stronger than Goku for the hour or so that Goku was in the chamber in the Cell battle is stupid. Not because it's not feasible, but because in the show (at least the english dub I've seen and what I've watched of the japanese subs) it's stated that the REASON Goku wins is that he's good. That being good means you win. And I guess that got old for me.

Yeah part of the thing that doesn't make me blame Goku as much for being a bad husband is that he didn't seem to want it in the first place / kinda got tricked into it. Why in the world ChiChi thought they were a good match I'll never know. I mean Goku even thinks Bulma is better-looking (and smarter?). (The kid Buu fight/old Kai wants pictures of a naked woman and Goku suggests Bulma would be better than ChiChi.)
And yay for discussion. :)
