What I get for trying to save some electricity

We unplugged everything before we left. After several days, modems don't come back as quickly, and I think ours pulled new provisioning data when it came back up and fetched a new IP address. We have one that conforms to DOCSIS 2, which means that 100Mbps normally "only" delivers 32Mbps down, but that's been perfectly sufficient.

Only now it's capped at 1.5Mbps down, (though oddly still 12Mbps up), and after two and a half painful hours with Comcast, I found out why. They would never come out and actually admit it, but they seem to have an unspoken policy to severely cap DOCSIS 2 modems to essentially force customers to upgrade to DOCSIS 3, despite it never being a technical requirement. Comcast of course refused to reprovision the modem to work the way that it had been for the past half a year.

One minor side note is that there seems to be an exception for xfinitytv.comcast.net, which includes the CBS partnership where copies of program content are stored on Comcast's internal network, so the shows, (but not the commercials, heh), get delivered to the desktop at somewhere around 10Mbps, without buffering.
