young voices writer's conference

today was fun. very fun.

lauren had a last-minute choir practice and vivian had swimming...so what started out to be a group thing turned into a single person thing. even though i knew i would probably go to the writer's conference alone today, i wasn't worried. really, the worst that could happen was that i'd eat lunch by myself and i didn't mind that, since unlike lauren, i would not sit on a bench by a pond and read a book in a totally loner-ish attitude. i would just go to the lunchtime open mic, which was a part of the conference.

turns out i was right not to worry. i saw someone who i met in last year's conference and she was with meryl and another girl. so i just hung out with them, which was very cool. and the food was great, as usual. the egg sandwiches weren't as good as the ones at the youth summit, but this time, i had a veggie wrap and it was amazing. and their brownies...

anyway, about the conference, the main speaker, janet mcnaughton, was alright. she was basically reading her speech, which was a little boring, although she did have some interesting insights and tips. the workshops were really good though. for my morning, i decided to go to the workshop led by an editor/writer. that was interesting, since i've always wanted to improve my editing skills. she talked about the different types of editors, how to edit our work, and how to incorporate editing skills with our writing. she also talked about publishing and although i don't plan to be a writer, i still liked it. very informative.

for the afternoon, i went to the workshop led by a fiction/non-fiction writer, who taught us how to set up a reading series, which is like a meeting where you read your work. this one was a lot of fun. we brainstormed locations around the school where you could have a reading series(some were really weird) and the types of writing that could fit into those locations. we also learned some secret tips on presenting and reading to an audience...we had to swear not to tell anyone what we learned.

overall, a very enjoyable day. i liked this a lot more than last year's conference, although i may be a little biased, due to the brownies. i also learned some interesting stuff about other schools, such as: r.h. king has a space under their stairs, they have no elevators although they have seven floors, and they have a bomb shelter. no kidding. their school went through both world wars. they also had a case where a student fell through the floor because the building's breaking apart. seriously, i'd be scared to take a step anywhere in that school. plus, meryl talked about some stuff that goes on at st. joes.

afterward, i went to fairview to look for a present for my little sis but failed to get anything for her. i did buy a pack of green pens at grand and toy and saw adrian working there.
