English

I know this might sound weird, but does anyone ever question the English language (or any language really, I just happen to have far more experience with English than any other one)?

I get into this thing every so often, where I just start questioning everything about the language. Like 'who decided that these random shapes stood for sounds and which shapes corresponded to which sounds?,' 'who decided that a "car" was the name for a thing that's made of metal that we sit in and use as a means for transportation?,' and even things as basic as 'how does any of this actually make any sense?'

Well, yesterday, I was studying for my second macroeconomics exam and I started wondering how all these symbols and their corresponding sounds get so ingrained in your mind that when you look at a sheet covered in words, you see things, like objects and ideas, and hear the words rather than seeing a whole bunch of symbols and shapes on a page. I think I was getting tired from all the studying and bored out of my mind because as I was thinking about this, the words started swimming on the page.

Anyway, that was my random little game my mind was playing on me while I was trying to review the self correcting mechanism for recessionary and inflationary gaps...
