Return of Flatfish Poster

Well, just got back from New Orleans and the ASIH meeting. It was a very strange experience to say the least. For starters, it is the largest meeting I have been to (1500+ in attendance). Even with so many people, I only knew 5 of these people prior to the meeting, and none of them very well. That led to some interesting differences (compared to other meetings I have attended). Usually we have had a group going to a meeting and we would all share a room, eat meals, and hang out after talks. This time I did everything by myself. It was odd to be so solitary among so many people. Even so, there were plenty of interesting talks (including 5 whole sessions on fish systematics!) but a lot of people seemed to be presenting very preliminary information or arguing the same old arguments, so nothing all that cutting edge. My poster was visited by about 12 people during my 2 hour presentation time. Better than the other meetings I have been to, but still I wonder about whether it was worth the time and effort.

At least that was the last big trip for me this summer. A week and a half in Denver for fun and games and a week in NO for the meeting, and the summer is almost half way gone. I have to get in gear and finish working on my thesis. A new draft is due in just under 2 weeks and it isn't going all that well. Hopefully I can get one final burst of energy and inspiration and get it done on time.
