piecing together a year.

...

wake wake wake.

in the wake of a long night, the morning bells spring me up from sleep. high expectations and impatience cut weight from my brow.

stamping through what rome might have called an achievement, a sweet smell draws us in. the plunders of foreign nations display themselves for our amusement. you seem amazed at a strangers linguistic possibilities.

chalk outlines and tire marks scratched up and down the pavement. all the while, gladiators battle in monuments. reborn in stone.

we keep our hands to ourselves and run the concrete gamut till our legs freeze. till there is nothing left.

...

we all seem to fight ghosts that we cant win against. we all seem to enjoy false hopes. the past, cast in marble and iron, is not so easy to forget.

no escape from our deeds. no relief from the sea. the rain clouds raise the tide up to our necklines. if we motion for the rain to stop, nature will ignore us.

...

piles of nightmares break me into the world again and i decide to take the road less traveled. i shout reason after reason and you just call it excuses.

well, excuse me.

...

it seems fair to say that my heart persists with the same stale old beat. i don't keep coming back because i want to get hurt. i keep coming back because i can live with the truth.

and im glad i can see orion again. im glad i can point him out to you as we dash headlong into the night. he promises to watch over us.

driving far from safety, we talk till our inhibitions drop. some things are easier to say when we don't have to look in each others eyes. getting it out is still hard work, but i'll keep my head up.

every damn step of the way.

...

if i twist my leg to escape, i'll cut straight through to the bone. i'm too scared to just chew my foot off. the day drags on without me. i lay chained to my certain end. no one comes to rescue me, and i dont have the courage to break free.

...

i keep my head on straight
know my place
heart worn, expression stale

i trade secrets with you
kiss something blue
and hope my luck prevails

...

i take you to the start of the circle. the end of the line. uncover the scene and you will never look at me the same again. you will know all of my secrets.

what i hope happens is that im broken free from the loop. that you wrest me free with your kiss. just this once, show me how to sin. show me what this really is.

place your lips on mine and grin.

whisper: begin.

...

as predicted, winter pulls us closer together. the winds blow my sail to new shores, new experiences. for all the blood in the sea, we can still see the bottom, and i thank god we stay afloat.

...

we don't have a name for it yet, so be patient. it may fall apart before it ever really gets off the ground. searching for the right words takes time, so in the interim we cling to each other. you make a few suggestions that i take to heart, but for once i know what it is i want. its not complicated.

...

so keep your heart open wide
and don't dance on the lies

...

laying flat against the concrete, eyes to the sky, here with you, love inside a lie, upside down clouds, skitter across the moon, and even as we part, i know ill see you again soon, god will bless me again with you, another night spent under covers, memories strewn around my neck, let me pin kisses to your jacket, dont leave just yet

...

"where does this go?"

"anywhere you like."

i tie another dandelion to the wire wreath. seeing memory pile upon memory puts it all in perspective. knowing when to stop is the hard part.

"here." she guides my hands to the next spot. another golden ream of flowers set atop the wreath. i ask, "what are these for?"

she ties a white rose to the bottom.

"they're so we remember."
