"Please don't leave me..."
"I would never leave you, I promise..."
She smiled.
"I love you..."
There were smiles and cheers as he helped her down the stage. Everyone were in a frenzy as they crowded around them, clapping them on the back and saying their congratulations. The audience were leaving, and the stage were being cleaned up by the staff. As they walked, he could hear people continuing praising their wonderful performance.
He smiled and gave her hand a slight squeeze. She turned to him then, the dim lighting of the room making her eyes look golden.
With her head tilted in confusion, Arthy could do nothing more but blush. She was just too cute sometimes, he couldn't help himself. He shook his head, telling her that it was nothing and she turned back to their classmates and continued talking.
A few weeks ago, the senior class was asked to prepare a play, and for some kind of reason, he was aked to play the prince alongside the brunette witch. Adelle and he had never had a smooth relationship. Sure, they got on alright a few times, but most of the time, they were trying to sabatoge the other and get them in more trouble than ever. He chuckled silently to himself, thinking of that first time they got in trouble together. Imagine his surprise when he found out the pastry explosion was her fault, and it wasn't even on purpose.
They had protested of course. How could they work together when they hated each other vehemently, well, claimed to hate each other anyway. But the others cut off their arguments and reasoned out with them. You're a shapeshifter, you were born to act. They said. Adelle had then put her hands on her hips and demanded an explanation as to why she was chosen. They told her it was because she was probably the only one who could actually stand Arthy without pummelling him. She had thrown a fit then, but in the end, they managed to force her to work with them.
Arthy didn't know when it started. He hated having to act with her and pretend they loved each other. Slowly but surely though, he could feel his heart beating for real whenever she leaned towards him, her eyes half-lidded and waiting for a kiss. He had pushed her to the ground and sat up abruptly, a blush on his face. He looked at her and then noticed the position she was in, leaning on her elbows and her knees bent together and her legs spread apart. Her skirt had ridden up her tighs as well as her shirt and skin was exposed. Looking up, he could see her face red in anger (and probably in embarrassment) and the corner of her eyes filled with tears.
The picture burned in his mind and he ran off the auditorium.
As the weeks passed by, he came to accept the growing feelings he had for her. Soon, the words he spoke weren't from the script but from his heart. If only she knew.
Whenever they walked in a classroom together, people kept teasing them, telling them they looked cute together and wondered if they were really an item. Arthy would tell them that Adelle wanted to keep it a secret and she would hit him on the head an call him a pervert and walk off with a huff. Arthy would only smile and wish that she'd just play along so he could wrap his arms around her and let him call her his.
He learned to sink into his role and forget everything that was happening around them. Whenever they would practice, it was the happiest days of his life. He'd be able to hold her and she'd only smile at him as though he was the only thing important in her life. And then his heart would ache when he'd remember she was merely acting. She'd let go of his hand and walk away after the day was over, not looking back as she ran after the necromancer girl who kept hanging around her.
Lily had once cornered him and asked him. She may have been oblivious to a lot of things, but the way his eyes followed Adelle everywhere was something that she just didn't miss.
Why don't you just tell her? she asked him as they were leaning against the wall backstage while Adelle watched the performing scene from the catwalk, her legs swinging back and forth. Arthy had sighed and looked her in the eyes. He still found her undead eyes creepy, but he had gotten used to them.
She's in love with someone else, was his simple answer. As if on cue, the door to the auditorium and in came the guy Arthy had soon come to hate with a burning passion. He heard Adelle's cry of joy as she scrambled off the catwalk and had jumped, confident she'd be caught.
As soon as she was in his arms safely, Arthy looked away. Lily patted him on the shoulder trying to cheer him up but soon gave up as she joined her friend.
Oh how he wished that this play was real. That the relationship they shared here would break through the boundaries of real life and make his dreams come true. But he knew it wasn't meant to be. He knew that as soon as everything was over, he'd never have the chance to hold her again.
And now, looking at their linked hands as everyone congratulated them on a job well done, he knew the dream was almost over.
She looked at him, her smile so radiant and her face red from all the praises. She kissed him on the cheek, and he felt his heart break when she pulled away.
"Good job tonight blondie." she told him. He smirked, she never really liked calling him by his name.
"Right back at 'ya." he told her.
Then, just as he feared, she let go and walked away, without turning back. And he was left there with his hand in midair, feeling incomplete.
"Please don't leave me..."
"I would never leave you, I promise..."
She smiled.
"I love you...
...more than you could ever know..."
