I just got the 2008 season brochure for the Hollywood Bowl. The box office opens May 10, so I figured I'd put on here some of the concerts to which I would like to go, in case anyone else feels similarly. Tickets (that I can afford) are $1, $8, $10, $12, $13, $15, $16, $18, $20, $21 or $23, depending on the night in question. Those denoted with an asterisk are those I'd particularly enjoy, and those with two asterisks I all but plan on begging, borrowing or stealing my way to.
.
Saturday, June 28
Sgt. Pepper's Revisited (with Cheap Trick and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and special guests)*
Reprise of last year's concert where they basically, well, do the Beatles' amazing album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, plus other Beatles songs. Dad has the soundtrack and it rocks.
.
Tuesday, July 8
Carmina Burana (LA Philharmonic, Pacific Chorale, soloists)
I have never heard the Carmina Burana, but I want to.
.
Wednesday, July 9
Jazz at Lincoln Center (Wynton Marsalis, Natalie Cole)
Um, two jazz masters...need I say more?
.
Sunday, July 13
Bizet's Carmen (Denyce Graves, LA Phil)*
They're doing this at the LA Opera, but it would be cheaper to see it this way. Another classic I have not heard or seen.
.
Wednesday, July 16
Swing Night (The Manhattan Transfer) **
I absolutely love the Manhattan Transfer, and absolutely must see them live. Must.
.
Fri-Sun August 8-10
Les Miserables in Concert (Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Rosie O'Donnell, and more)*
Les Miz isn't my favorite but the music is pretty good, and I would enjoy the staged concert setting. And Stokes Mitchell is phenomenal.
.
Wednesday, August 13
Etta James and the Roots Band (also Paolo Nutini)
Etta James. At laaaaaaast...and Nutini is a cutie patootie.
.
Thursday, August 14
Percussion, Planets and Pictures (LA Phil)
I love Holst's The Planets. Also doing Ride of the Valkyries. Sounds like a good night.
.
Tuesday, August 19
Joshua Bell a la Francaise (LA Phil)*
Joshua Bell is so freaking cute. I gotta hear that violin.
.
Tuesday, August 26
German Romantics (LA Phil, Sa Chen on piano)
I like Germany. I like the Romantics. Wagner, Schumann and Brahms. Sounds good.
.
Fri-Sat August 29-30
John Williams: A Hollywood Legend (LA Phil, John Williams conducting)*
I usually try to avoid the plebian concerts, but I would love to hear the masterful LA Phil playing Williams' most famous film scores. Plus Stanley Donan is the MC.
.
Wednesday, September 3
Bossa Nova at 50
Samba, cool jazz and syncopated guitar. How cool!
.
Tuesday, September 9 or Thursday, September 11
Mahler's Symphony 8 (LA Phil, LA Master Chorale, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting) **
Salonen is a genius to work with and to watch. Eight soloists, the LA Master Chorale, a children's chorus...come on.\
Whadya say?
