So when I was looking at the library catalog for something totally unrelated (and now I have no idea what it could have been) I found an entry for "Unclutter Your Life in One Week". So I had to get it. I mean really, 1 week? Years of stuff-gathering in a week? I found 2 flaws right away. A) she lives in an apartment. OK, yeah. You can still get lots of stuff crowding the space but you still (generally) don't have as many rooms as a house and the basement packed with boxes you are avoiding. And B) she doesn't have kids. So there are not the toys school papers and just all the stuff you get for having a mini-me in the house. I do get that she's also not just about like cleaning your house for presentable-ness, but also a bit about focusing your life on the activities you want to pursue and getting rid of the extraneous things.
Anyway, she breaks the day into 3 parts - an area for the morning, some work-thing for work, and an area for the evening. So Monday you do the wardrobe area and the laundry in the morning, you desk at work, and your entryway in the evening. Um. If I could get all that done in 1 day, I don't think I would need a book.
So she doesn't really say WHEN do do the extra rooms (like the girls' room), or really any other closets besides the wardrobe (not that we have closets), or any kind of method for all the stuff in the basement. Maybe the idea is that after your first week you are on such a kick that you just continue...
She does actually have formulas for how many sets of towels and sheets you need. Crazy?
As an aspiring minimalist (except for, you know, books) today I am working on my wardrobe area. It helps that I had just had a friend over to help me weed. The idea of the Monday tasks are that they are sort of your first things you need to deal with in part of your day. So you get up and get dressed, when you get to work you encounter your desk, and when you get home it's your entry. Which is not a bad grouping.
So I'm going to try this for a bit and see how it goes. I did also order a couple other de-cluttering books from the library to compare.
Also, because you can't have a book without a website anymore, here is that:
