This was a particularly hard category because I am so into genre fiction (funny as I have so much trouble writing it). In the end, I had to go with Scully though. Just for respect. Scully was so formative in how I thought of professional women, relationships between women and men and female characters in action/sci fi/fantasy. I once saw an interview with Gillian Anderson where she was asked what it was like to play a "buttoned up sex symbol". That always stuck with me. Nothing against female characters showing skin, far from it. But it's rare that a female character isn't male gaze sexualized and Scully really wasn't. They didn't feel the need to. She had the male audience already. She was brilliant, kind and tough and she happened to be a woman. And of course, we viewers were finally rewarded afters like five hundred years with the truth ...no, not that truth, the truth that Mulder and Scully were in love...but they never treated each other like sex objects. I was so into seeing this man and this women solving mysteries together, arguing different points of view and both needing each other. As a child it meant so much to me that Mulder was saved by Scully just much as he was saved by her. And she was a doctor! She was in the FBI and the doctor. It was just so cool. Plus her snark was second to none.
