So yeah. I was a little afraid to go see the midnight showing because although I enjoy Twilight I enjoy hating and making fun of it just as much. I didn't know if I would be able to stand being around a bunch of fangirls. (There were maybe twenty guys in the theatre, lol.)
Boy, was I wrong! The movie was LOLarious. No one was holding it too sacred to laugh. Seriously, I'd say they should have cut the SPARKLE scene, it clearly wasn't made for movie screens, but...I don't know. It was liberating to laugh at it.
But what really made the movie for me? RPATZ's performance. In the book Edward is described as a cold, ice statue of Adonis. He's formal, protective, old-fashioned, controlling and although he always seems to be laughing at Bella doesn't seem to be the funniest guy around, turning several girls to that whole Team Jacob thing since he can at least crack a joke with Bella.
But besides the fact that I personally think he looked good and I only had to deal with one reference to how cold his skin felt, Robert won more over because he played Edward as...bizarre. This was a weird, weird person. His voice, maybe because Robert is british and the american accent isn't natural to him, was off. The things he said were two steps above normally campy. He looked a her like he belonged in a straight jacket. He crouched on trees like an anime character. It was all a little too much for me. The moment he said "hello" I laughed (and so did the rest of the theatre!) and it actually made me buy their "omg! love" more because at least he was a compelling character. I think he did a great job, he made Edward hilarious while not sacrificing any of the character's motivations...he was obviously in desperate pain every time he kissed her. I have to say, I'm freaking impressed.
Also, the two never actually said "I love you." Which was strangely satisfying to me.
They took out some of Bella's marysueishness but I felt it just left her very ordinary. Which I guess is the point. I don't know. I just don't like Bella much. But I guess I didn't hate her in the movie.
Emmet was lolarious. How perfect to have him and Rosalie and the wangster jock and bitchy cheerleader types. I am still team Rosalie, lol. The rest of the family was just as I pictured them. Jasper being maybe a little less cool, if only because he was underused. Esme a little stronger, thank god.
And the girl who played Jessica! She was perfect. You know that girl. You're kind of friends with her, but she is ridiculous.
So yeah...if you can embrase cheese and camp, go see Twilight. It has some glaring problems taken straight from the book but adds some fun by putting in the big screen.
Do not go if you intend to take it too seriously. But uh, why would you?
Also, I made a sale at work! At my new job! Did I mention I have a new job? And I've been slacking a bit on my NaNo. But there's still time!
