Can you identify this "grass"?

This bastard is all over my yard. Normally, I don't care about weeds (or "grass" as less hostile people might call it) but it is interspersed among my real grass, front and back and is approaching being 25% of the ground cover. No problem except the lawn mower cannot get through the stalks - too tough. I mow the lawn and these long stems stick up ( Read more... )

Ross just told me I'm mistaken - it's not that the blades aren't sharp enough to cut, it's that the reel mower just pushes them down flat first because a blade isn't the first thing in contact on the push mower. Then as soon as you roll over, they pop back up.

I have no neighbours, friends or family I could borrow a gas mower from. And, I really don't like gas. In addition to being expensive (a fair bit more in Canada than in the US), it smells, it's volatile and I don't want it sitting in a hot shed or being transported inside my little car. It has a real PITA factor for me.

I spent an hour plucking most of the front yard and a bit in the back. I wouldn't mind if they wanted to grow in the muck of the swale if they would just stay off the lawn.

I see wild daisies growing in the empty lot behind us. I want them to jump the fence! I like me some daisies. I'm thinking from what I just read, if I plant some lupins in the muck in the fall, they may grow next year. Muck is very unattractive, especially with plastic bags, garbage, construction debris and of course Tim Horton cups left by inconsiderate @sses. Too bad there's no way to prove which builders did what. It really pisses me off.

Yeah, that's the thing with the reel mower, you can't adjust the blades (much, if at all) so if the grass is taller (or hardier) than the blade, it just mashes it. Bummer man.

When the daisies go to seed go grab them and spread 'em around!

I don't think I've ever noticed daisies in anything but their flowery state. Do the petals fall off? Do they dry out?

Yep, look for the dead blooms and watch what happens. This is my first year with wild daisies too so I don't know what the seeds will look like, but they will follow the flowers.
