Job Description

Position Title: Exhibits Coordinator for Zeum
Reports To: Exhibits Manager
Status: Part-time (4 days), regular, non-exempt

Organizational Description: Zeum is a not-for profit, community-based art and technology museum serving children, youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Zeum is the only museum in the Bay Area where individuals of all ages, backgrounds, communities and learning styles combine hands-on use of animation, music and sound production, digital art and live performance with the power of their imaginations to create high quality stories, movies, music, art and more. Ideally located in the heart of downtown’s South of Market district, Zeum is housed in a unique 34,000 square foot facility and theater on the rooftop of San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens.

Position Description:
The Exhibits Coordinator supports Zeum's exhibits and programs by working closely with the Exhibits Manager, Exhibits Tech Assistant and IT Manager, Responsibilities include: day-to-day and long-term exhibit maintenance and troubleshooting, exhibit installation/de-installation, collaboration with exhibit developers, and design research and prototyping. The successful candidate will be able to work independently, keep the exhibits running at full capacity, work collaboratively to improve the quality, function, technology, and response time to exhibit maintenance issues, and creatively problem-solve to overcome a wide range of curatorial and technical challenges.


Exhibits Maintenance & Development
ß Perform daily walkthroughs and diagnostic test of all exhibit spaces, including repairs and cleaning.
ß Maintain inventory of exhibit and building supplies and tools.
ß Maintain the exhibit helpdesk system in order to prioritize and execute repairs and report on process.
ß Provide feedback and assistance for Zeum’s technology and capacity plans to support organizational growth and future exhibits
ß Work with Zeum staff, exhibit designers and fabricators to design, implement and maintain the technical and non-technical elements of Zeum exhibits and programs.
ß Configure and support visitor-facing desktops, Windows 2000/XP and Mac OS 9/X.
ß Assist with training floor staff in regards to operating and maintaining exhibits.
ß Assist the Exhibits Manager, Exhibits Tech Assistant and IT Manager to purchase and inventory hardware, software and other exhibit supplies.
ß Coordinate and support volunteers and/or interns, as available.

Exhibits Installation
ß With support from the Exhibits Manager, supervise and direct exhibit installation crews, and work alongside them in the preparation, installation and de-installation of exhibits.
ß Supervise and participate in setting up and taking down of rigging, flooring, portable chairs, barricades, staging, tables and all other equipment for each scheduled activity in all areas within Zeum;
ß Operate scissor lifts, cherry pickers, pallet jacks, air compressors, power saws, power drills, other power tools, miscellaneous tools and equipment.
ß Work with Exhibits Manager, Director of Operations, and contracted building engineers to improve the overall quality of Zeum’s facilities.

Duties and responsibilities may change. Employees are encouraged to be flexible and responsive to changes in scope of duties.

Essential Functions:
This position requires the ability to: be highly organized and timely; to bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs; work with multiple technologies; stand and sit for extended periods of time; read and write; work effectively and efficiently under sometimes considerable stress.

Minimum Qualifications:
ß BA/BS/BFA or equivalent desired
ß Minimum of 2 years professional experience with exhibits production and installation required.
ß Minimum of 1 year professional experience managing art/exhibit installation crews required.
ß Excellent oral and written communication skills
ß Ability to multitask & prioritize multiple projects in a timely fashion is a must.
ß Basic electrics, fabrication, rigging and picture framing skills required.
ß Proficiency in operating, installing and maintaining professional A/V and lighting equipment.
ß Demonstrate knowledge in operating and troubleshooting desktop computers and software in both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS desktop systems.
ß Proficiency in the fundamentals of digital media production software is highly desired (Final Cut Studio Pro, Logic Pro, Adobe Creative Suite and iLife)
ß Experience working with interactive exhibit design using physical computing technology is highly desired (Max/MSP/Jitter, Arduino, Processing, ActionScript and AppleScript).
