laptop v kindle v other tablets

My laptop took a tumble off the arm of the couch today and now it sounds like the fan is making angry noises at me. Combined with the periodic need for the system to check my hard disk for consistency and my blacks randomly looking like The Matrix if my screen is tilted just so.. I'm kind of afraid this thing is on the way out. It's had a three year run, which I guess is on the low end of standard. And who knows? With a chillmat and gentle handling I might be able to get another year out of it.

But it's got me thinking about something new.

I really like the idea of a tablet as a laptop replacer but I"m not sure how well it actually would fit with how I use my laptop. Sure, there's streaming video and fooling around the internet, which, in general, it would be fine for.  But I'm not quite convinced on writing. This 13-incher is a perfect keyboard size and going smaller for that doesn't seem particularly useful. And going bigger than the 7-inch tablet almost seems like I may as well just get a new laptop. (Coincidentally: Woot is selling a 17-inch, HP Pavilion touchscreen laptops for $350 today but 17 seems too big.).

It also doesn't help that I have absolutely no idea what I really need in terms of processing power. Firefox, Sims 2, VLC and Scrivener are my most-used programs, so I probably don't need supermega powerful processors but they're always so tempting.
