I'm working on Issue 24 of
Puzzle Fun Magazine. That's not exactly descriptive of the content, since very few of the many puzzles have specific clues or unique answers. Most of the puzzles in any given issue are minor variations on a small number of themes, and a plurality are optimization problems. Still, I wouldn't actually want Mr. Kurchan to rename it Optimization Grind Magazine, so I'll stop complaining.
Today happens to be my brother's birthday. I forgot to plan anything specific for it, but here's a new Consecutive Fillomino, which of course is all about recognizing when one count gives way to the next.
One influence on this puzzle was
a query made in response to my previous CF. I'm pretty sure TheSubro is talking about the sets of four consecutives in each corner; if that's right, the answer is clearly "yes."
Another theme, more obvious, is the two buttonhooks. (Of course they're question marks, but they aren't questioning anything in particular. "Buttonhooks" refers to a Peanuts strip where Sally asks Charlie Brown whether a certain sentence should be punctuated with a "spot" or a "buttonhook.") I wanted to do something with the circles that couldn't be done with a different mark, like a gray line. (
motris made a note about theming red puzzles vs. blue puzzles, but I can't find it right now linked below.) It was a teeny effort to find a shape big enough to stay interesting when shifted by half a diagonal unit, and this worked pretty well.
