How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?

What's in a name )

Wow. I'm *exactly* the same with names. They have to feel right, and yup, if a name has attached itself to a character, that's it. I can't change it even if I want to!

And I'm totally with you on the Alec thing too. If Nate or Eliot call Hardison Alec, it just throws me out of the story completely. Same when one of the team call Nate Nathan. He tends to be Nate to them on the show, and there needs to be a good reason for one of them to call him Nathan in a fic!

Hee~ Twin brain power go!

And I can see Eliot calling Hardison Alec if they are in a romantic relationship and he would use it only in intimate situations. I've read fic like that (I think, or I've dreamed them up) and that works but in general? No, just no. Same with Nate vs Nathan. Someone calling Nate Nathan makes me think of when my mum was angry with me and used all my names to get my attention :) If she added the last name too I knew it was really serious :p
