wherein I ramble about Buffy season 4

I successfully managed to avoid working on my paper tonight. Sure, it makes tomorrow a long, grueling day, but right now, I'm happy. I've felt crappy all day ("women trouble," lol), so I wasn't really up to writing a big chunk of a research paper anyway. So, instead, it's a night on the couch, watching TV with my best girlfriend.

I'm right in the middle of rewatching season 4 of Buffy. I've got to say I appreciate it more this time around. I started watching Buffy with season 4, so I didn't get most of the significance of what was happening. The overarching plot is still weird and wonky (what? you mean there's an overarching plot to this mess of a season? wait a minute! *squints* ye gods, not that random-ass frankenstein shit...my only consolation is Professor Bitch-Face bites it soon...), but it's already interesting watching the contrast in the Scooby Gang's methods vs. The Initiative.

And Riley=too sweet for words. Seriously. Hot as hell, too. (I DO like those big, broad-shouldered corn-fed midwestern boys whose big ol' hands could like palm a girl's whole face when he's kissing her. *cough*samwinchester*cough*.) And it's easy for me to forget--probably because I've never really written him in fanfic--that Spike=my all time fictional love. Any version of Spike, even the one whining in Giles's bathtub, is ♥. Big, cranky, tropical-shirt-wearing, former badass, chip-neutered, Passions-watching ♥.

[Digression: Season 5 Spike is the best Spike of them all, though. When I'm rewatching that season, expect some random squeeing here, several years too late. Y'all will just have to forgive me. I wasn't in fandom like this when I was watching Buffy. I didn't even KNOW what slash was back then. I've NEVER slashed Spike... 0_0]

"Something Blue" is still one of my favorite episodes of all time. (It kinda HAS to be if you're a so-called Spuffy 'shipper.) Spike to Buffy: And, once again, we're registering as Mr. and Mrs. Big Pile of Dust. *snorts* Xander: Can I be blind, too?. I've seen this episode at least half a dozen times, and it never ceases to amuse me. My friend who's watching through the series with me for the first time said she thinks the ep might be funnier than "Band Candy" (Joyce: That's so Juice Newton.). I don't know. What do y'all think?

"Hush" is so fucking creepy. It's amazing how riveting that ep is without any dialogue for over half of it. That and I love how the plot forces Buffy and Riley to find out each other's secrets. The thing that always makes trouble between Riley and Buffy is her strength, and I love that when he finds out about her, it's while he's watching an undeniable show of her strength. He can't reason it away. And he's on her level here, working side-by-side with her, which is also great to see.

I really want Riley to be the guy for her, but he isn't. I noticed it as early as "Doomed" (where they have to talk about their jobs, and where Buffy's scared an apocalypse is coming, and she gets spooked and decides to push him away). Riley is thisclose to being stubborn enough for Buffy. He tells her he won't give up on her, and he calls her on her shit (I'm doomed, hellmouth blah blah blah) in a way I'd forgotten he was capable of. But then when she shuts him down, he gives in. I'm telling you: THISCLOSE to being man enough for her.

Gotta say, though: he still looks damn sexy in his uniform, ordering around his squad. (That cool and calm take-charge thing is horribly sexy.) And, man-oh-man isn't it like a romance novel when he kisses her? *sigh*

Well, fuck. Who am I kidding. I wouldn't know what to do with a guy that nice, either. I'd fuck it up, too. Why are we so suspicious of nice guys?

[Personal digression: Actually, I think I want nice guys now, but it's hard to believe I deserve one. And those nice boys are DAMN HARD TO WOO. Especially when they are mostly in love with a girl named Rachel who has a boyfriend...and you want to squeeze them up because their puppy-dog crush is so cute...but, yet, IT'S NOT ON ME, DAMMIT... *grumbles*]
