Two ficlets for the Luau at lostsquee.

Title: How Far
Character: Sun
Rating: PG
Summary: Circa mid season 5, on her return to the island.
Note: For Queen isis2015, who requested Sun. ~175 words.

As she stands on the shore and looks out over the beach and the ocean, it's familiar--the same way photographs in an album might be. Keenly, she feels the distance between now and then, the time and space that has brought perspective.

Her feet on the sand feel like new feet, even if the island is just the same. She is different. Smarter. Probably, it took leaving to know what she's learned or to see how much she already knew about how to survive.

With her bifocal vision of now against then, she sees the island for what it is. Of course, what she sees is something she can't believe she lived through, even if she has to believe she'll live through it again. Back at home, the heroic plane crash survivor, she is a one-in-a-million defiance of the odds. Now that she's standing here, aware and afraid but so, so ready, she realizes exactly what that means.

Turning her back on the churning waves, she knows she's come farther than she ever realized before.

Title: To Protect
Characters/Pairing: Desmond, Charlie/Claire
Rating: PG
Summary: Circa season 3, about Desmond and his flashes. ~150 words.
Note: For Queen lostpuffin, who requested Desmond, heat, and shivers. I'm afraid my brain went pretty literal here. ;)

Desmond sits outside his tent on the beach, eating an almost ripe mango, feeling gloomy and contemplative despite the sun on his face and the gentle breeze taking the sweat from his skin. Despite, too, the laughter that's pouring from Claire's mouth as Aaron waves his tiny arms and legs at Charlie, his favorite maker of funny faces.

It's a compulsion, watching them. Watching Charlie, especially. He'd rather not look at him at all because then he could pretend he doesn't know exactly how he'll die. But he must look at him, all the time, because he's never sure when, only how.

Claire hugs her arms around Charlie's neck, smiling widely, and down Desmond's back runs a shiver. He doesn't like watching them, but since he has to, it's good that doing so reminds him what it is he's been gifted to protect.
