Something Holy
He doesn't like to think about this thing that Duck is going to do. He really, really doesn't. He knows it's because it makes him think too much about himself, and he doesn't want what Duck's doing to be about him. So he hugs him one last time and actually thinks of sending up a prayer, until he remembers he doesn't believe in prayer anymore.
Duck does, though, and that's what gets to Sam. It should be despair, right? He's killing himself because there's nothing left to do but use himself as a human bomb. The world they always knew is gone, the frakked-up world they made is gone, Nora's gone. Tucker will blow himself into pieces because that's all that's left of any of them.
But Tucker prays. He feels this is something holy, and maybe it is. Sam doesn't want to think it is, that the gods think they should do something like this, but he's seen too much. He knows better. If there are gods, they don't give a shit about Tucker and what he's doing. But Tucker does.
And he prays. This thing-to him it's a gesture of hope. Sam can see it in his eyes. Paying his life in advance of something bigger, better, stronger that's coming. Sam really wishes he could frakking believe it, but he can't. Not with Kara still missing.
Not even with Kara still missing, sometimes. That's the part that makes him not want to think about it, so he concentrates instead on Duck and the tired but sure way he walks away.
