unloading hell behind him step by step

One step after another, falling in line behind her. Letting her lead them to the raptor. Letting himself not be the leader anymore, because as a leader he lost them all. At least it feels like all.

The Cylons have vanished from their sight-for the time being, anyway-and Kara's standing here again, as real as she ever was, but still, he's saying, he's having to say, I lost half my crew.

Always one step forward and two steps back, he thinks.

But it doesn't feel like any steps forward anymore. So goddamn many people-teammates, strangers, but all family now. Gone. So, yeah, even if he's frakking relieved to see her, giddy with the idea of doing what had always seemed impossible-leaving, just frakking surviving-there's a part of him that will never leave this planet, he thinks. It will go down with the others, the other half of them, who deserved to be walking here beside him.

That's what keeps him walking now, as numbness and shock turns to equal measures of relief and bitterness. He thinks he's got enough hope and revenge to keep him moving forward, one step after another.
