where are you in the story?

After so many people (okay, like half a dozen) thanking me for writing Jack and Sawyer as in a real relationship and not just opportunistically homosexual, I started to wonder who this would bother and why. I guess I figure it comes down to where you are inside the story. I'm curious to hear why you write slash and how.

I apologize now for how long and academic this is. I'm a freakin' English teacher, and I miss all this analysis during the break in semesters.

Three possibilities:
1. Their sexuality could go either way: You write slash to be inside one man as he is seduced, getting turned on like he does at the other man. In other words, you can in some ways BE Jack and/or Sawyer.
2. Jack and Sawyer are not gay: You write slash to see one man seduce the other (and in most cases you enjoy that from both characters' perspectives or you'd be writing het), but you need to believe there's still room for them seducing you in the future or it's no fun. You cannot be either man; you are simply watching as one or both of your favorites gets off.
3. Jack and Sawyer are definitely gay or bi, You write slash to voyeuristically watch two men have sex/be in a relationship, and you find that just as hot if not hotter than watching a man and a woman, or two women. You do not need to believe they'd want you, and you don't need to put yourself in their shoes.

That was complicated as hell, and if y'all have already tossed this subject around, shoot me a link and I'll shut up. But I'm curious to know where you are in your stories. If this question is WAY too personal, you obviously don't have to comment. But it's not like I have any sinister motives. I'm just curious. I'm also wondering if the process for you is different when you write het, or if that has anything to do with why some of us rarely do.

Let me know if I've missed something or if I'm way off base. (Or if this is a stupid post and I oughtta delete it fast.)

For myself: I think I'm a combination of 1 and 3. I find it easiest to write sex scenes from inside a character (Sawyer lately, because I'm so crazy over Matthew Fox/Jack), but I also do find the two of them turning each other on sexy.
