Lost 2.19 "The Brig"

First off: I'm actually kind of glad Sawyer did it. Not that I like killing or that Sawyer took another life, but it felt real to me, like if he hadn't done it, it wouldn't have been right in terms of his character. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Sawyer growing into a better person. But I don't this is a big step backward. There's a difference between Michael shooting Ana Lucia in the chest and Sawyer killing this truly remorseless man. Sawyer didn't want to do it, but he really didn't seem to have much of a choice, given that Mr. Sawyer is evil and goaded him into it. And now perhaps he and Locke can be a little freer now that it's over.

And Josh? GUH. So good. I really can't even start typing too much about the whole A-plot storyline before it devolves into...

1. a squee-fest about how good Josh and Terry (and Michael Emerson) are.

2. a rant about Locke, that sneaky, no-agency fucker (whose spiritual quest really does sort of fascinate me, actually).

3. a set of cartwheels over how I'm finally starting to come around to how complicated and interesting and suddenly relevant to the whole island this business of the Others and who they are and what they want can be. (And how they connect to the Dharma Initiative.) I think that's why I liked this episode: everything that happened felt like it had repercussions for the entire group of them. I like it when the show feels like it's working all these things into the same tapestry instead of working on two or three separate looms.

On the whole, I thought it was a tightly written, interesting episode. One of the best of the season, IMO. One of those that you look at the clock at 9:30 and think it's only halfway done? Wow.

Sayid and Desmond got to share the screen. I swear Desmond was flirting with him, being all smiley and coy. It was cute.

And the chick was cool, too. I'm fond of those who can hold their own, especially against Sayid. Don't have a clue who she is, but I'm cool with that at this point. ('Cause once we start to get to know her, I just have this feeling the writers will fuck her up.)

Don't know what to think about the whole "we found flight 815 in the ocean" thing. Or that Mr. Sawyer thinks they're in hell. (It's SO not hell; if they're dead, it's purgatory, not hell, but I don't think they're dead.) Anyway, theory and speculation give me a headache.

And the best thing about this episode: we have no IDEA who to believe now: Locke or Juliet? This kink in the storytelling is riveting to me, because this shit could go down so many different ways. Who's playing who? I don't know, but I love it!

And we don't know what side Jack's on either! That really does make me nervous, but I have this odd faith that things will be okay. I don't know why, but I do. Maybe it's wishful thinking. Maybe that blind hope is behind why I've been mostly ignoring what I feel about Jack being so weird and numb and seeming just plain stupid about Juliet. I'm crossing my fingers the man doesn't get hurt in all this, isn't caught in the mind games that destroy him.

Poor guy, just wanting to go camping with the boys. He can share Desmond's tent… ;)
