This was passed on second hand, this is not the actual conversation which took place, but close.
A couple in New Mexico wish to buy tickets to some of the events in Atlanta for the summer Olympic games. They called up the main ticket number and had the following conversation:
After the initial "hello's" and formalities of which events and when, it was time to get down to business. "Where are you calling from, Mam?" asked the operator.
"We are at such and such street, Santa Fe, New Mexico," she replied.
"I'm sorry, I can't help you. We are not allowed to sell tickets to other countries, you must contact your local Olympic ticket supplier. We can only sell tickets to residents of the United States."
"But we are residents. We live in New Mexico." A little flustered by this time.
"Sorry, we can only sell tickets to those living in one of the 50 states. This is the number for ticket sales for the United States only. Please call your own country's ticket number." Obviously missing a minor detail.
"We are part of the United States. We LIVE in New Mexico! It is one of the states!" Now someone is really upset.
"Thanks for calling, but we cannot help you here. Have a good day." And off the operator goes.
