My friend MM and I spent a week in Boston, What a great city to visit.
When we arrived at our Hotel the room wasn't ready so we checked our bags and set out to the North side. MM. had read about a religious procession in the Italian (mostly) part of town, so off we went. We found Hanover Street without too much trouble and just as we arrived at the banner proclaiming the Festival of Saint Joseph which was to take place two weeks in the Future, the Police Band began to play and we spotted the litter carrying the scantily dressed statue of St. Rocco, really. He was festooned with wide light blue satin ribbons to which were pinned bills of many denominations. We followed the procession down the street looking in the hop windows and plotting a conolli feast for dessert later on. Finally, when Saint Rocco stopped at an intersection near a likely looking restaurant MM. had picked out I went up and pinned a dollar on one of the ribbons and got a prayer card from an old lady following the saint offering pins to those of us who had come unprepared.
Inside the restaurant near the cashier there were three or four banners on poles announcing up coming festivals, each and displaying broad pastel ribbons with offerings attached with pins. The food was fab. MM. had gnocchi and I had antipasto appetizers. Most of the customers were Italians from the neighborhood and many were speaking Italian,
On the way back to the subway it started to rain, pour really just we passes a pastry shop and MM. remembered his canolli the store was packed. There were large glass cases filled with rich looking goodies on two sides of the room and a free standing two sided case in the middle of the room filled with wrapped cookies and pastries. MM restrained himself and only got 3, We got to go back 3 more times! Everywhere we went from then on we would mention finding the best Bakery in Boston. The locals were quick to guess Mike's Pastry. Only one woman guessed another place. She was new in town and distinguished between pastry shops and bakeries.
More later. Really I just need to sleep. Oh the glamorous life of a night nurse.
