For the next few weeks, Yesung went out of his way to avoid Ryeowook, who seemed to pass him on the way to every single class. Yesung had become far too paranoid, glancing over his shoulder for the flash of impossibly white teeth, ever mocking him.

Each time he spotted the younger boy in the hall, he spun and rushed off down a separate corridor, not even minding the fact that he was late for every single class.

He skipped meals often, opting instead to grab food from the kitchens and return to the Slytherin common room, waiting the periods out by drifting uneasily in and out of dreams of small, gentle hands and vibrant laughter.

The detentions never seemed to end. Each night, Yesung would stalk into the classroom, determined to completely ignore Ryeowook for the duration of the detention. Each night, the two boys would leave with abnormal clothing, differently colored hair, unhealthy splotches, and another detention.

"I'm sorry about the fucking table, okay?!" Yesung exploded in the hallway after the eleventh detention. "And the boils! Can't we just forget about that?"

"What do you mean?" Ryeowook asked, looking genuinely puzzled. "The table you threw at me three nights ago? I've already forgiven you for that with the frogs in your pants."

"No! In the lib-- wait, you really don't know what I'm talking about?"

"Um... should I?"

"Wait, then... what?! You mean... then... why are you still bothering me?!" Yesung sputtered, face reddening with anger.

"Oh," Ryeowook chuckled, as if it was the most obvious question in the world. "Because I like you."

Yesung stood there for a moment while Ryeowook's words sank in. This nonsense was really beginning to drive him insane. He had almost become immune to the Hufflepuff's advances, which had become increasingly more forceful as time went on. The constant groping and confessions often led to the two engaging in a duel, less out of anger on Yesung's part and more due to confusion and frustration. His body responded on its own, blushing and various other reactions that forced him to question where he stood in terms of his feelings (and sexual preference). He shoved them away, hiding them in the bottom of the trunk at the foot of his bed, figuratively speaking, but the idea lingered in his mind day to day. He had come to the conclusion that Ryeowook was simply screwing with his mind, and chose to brush off the advances in unnecessarily violent ways.

"You... are an idiot," Yesung responded dully, turning to walk down the corridor toward the dungeons and much-needed sleep. After a few steps, however, he was stopped by a soft tug on his hand. Yesung turned, finding himself far too close to Ryeowook's confused expression than he would have liked to be.

"Where are you going?" Ryeowook asked, his smile wavering a bit as he laughed nervously. "Isn't this the part where you tell me you feel the same? And then we make out or skip happily down the hall or something equally ridiculous. Any of those would work, I'm not picky."

Knowing there was nothing he could say that would be intelligible at that moment, Yesung remained silent, insides churning at Ryeowook's pitiful expression and head buzzing with some unidentifiable emotion. A few seconds passed before Ryeowook leaned in, in what seemed like slow motion to Yesung, and planted a brief kiss on Yesung's lips. Ryeowook pulled away quickly, looking as though he was attempting to decipher Yesung's expression (or lack thereof).

Something shifted behind his eyes, and they glistened, pooling with unshed tears. He kissed him again, desperately this time, hands coming to the sides of Yesung's face, but withdrawing just as quickly when Yesung pulled back slightly, just enough to get out of Ryeowook's reach. Several tears slipped pass the younger boy's long eyelashes, and he quickly brushed them away. Yesung took a step back, bringing his hand up to the side of his face, attempting to stop the dizziness that had seeped into his head. He glanced up at Ryeowook, guilt twisting in his stomach as he took in the Hufflepuff's red eyes and faded smile.

"But, I don't--" Yesung began, but was cut off by Ryeowook.

"No, no. I'm sorry. I guess I just misread..." He took a shuddering breath, followed by a weak laugh, a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. I really am an idiot, aren't I? I'll just... go now. Or something." He turned swiftly and shuffled down the corridor, his sniffling echoing around him.

Yesung stood there for a few minutes, staring after the boy, even long after he had disappeared around the corner. His chest felt too tight, and the dizziness had yet to fade.

He wondered, vaguely, if he should have kissed him back.

---

The next day, Yesung found himself retracing his old paths to his classes, ignoring the worried look on Eeteuk's face as he glanced around the halls. He didn't catch sight of the Hufflepuff until lunch, as he took his seat across from Donghae. Ryeowook was sitting between Siwon and a short boy with small eyes and brown hair that he kept tossing back out of his face. Ryeowook laughed happily with the two of them as another Hufflepuff spoke animatedly. Yesung noted how, when Ryeowook laughed, he would lean his face into the shoulder of the nameless boy. While he listened intently, his arm would snake around the kid's shoulder's, rubbing circles on his arm.

Yesung hadn't realized he'd been studying Ryeowook's expressions until a hand waved in his face. He blinked, dragged out of his reverie.

"You're going to burn a hole though his face," Heechul informed him, smirk claiming 75% of his face. "Quit staring."

"I don't know what you--" Yesung began, before he was cut off by Donghae.

"We're not dumb, you know," he said slowly.

"We've been trying to get your attention for 5 minutes," Eeteuk added, looking at Yesung strangely. "Is everything all r--"

"He hasn't once looked your way, either," Heechul chimed in over Eeteuk, clicking his tongue. "And who's that boy he's all over?"

"Henry," Donghae supplied them with the answer. "Fifth year Hufflepuff."

"Is our Yesung experiencing his first unrequited love?" Heechul taunted.

"Who said anything about--" Yesung began, annoyed.

"No, it isn't the first," Donghae reminded Heechul, cutting Yesung off. "Remember Bada, back in second year?"

"Oh, yeah!" Heechul tapped his chin thoughtfully. "And then there was Jihae in third year. And Kyunghee, during fourth year."

"And we forgot about--" Donghae began in excitement, but was cut off when Yesung slammed his hands down onto the table with a bang. Every pair of eyes turned to look at the Slytherin table. Except one.

Getting to his feet, Yesung stormed out of the Great Hall, leaving the student body whispering in his wake.

---

When detention finally rolled around, Yesung approached the door to the classroom feeling nervous. He peeked his head in and glanced around. Seeing no sign of Ryeowook, he and his sinking stomach slipped into the room. He took at seat, back facing the door, and focused hard on what he was going to say when the younger joined him.

Oh, you're here. Let's stop getting detention, so we don't have a repeat of last night.

Hi, Ryeowook. How's your new toy?

Can we just forget what happened? It wasn't a big deal, right?

I'm sorry.

The door opened suddenly, jarring him out of his thoughts, and he tensed up. He turned slowly, his throat closing from anxiety.

"Here, Jongwoon," the professor walked in briskly and dropped a box onto the desk in front of him, and Yesung exhaled, a mixture of relief and despair weighing heavily on his chest. "Sort through these and place them in alphabetical order, by the second letter of the twentieth word on the 268th page. Where's Ryeowook?"

"Uh..." Yesung had no idea. The door opened again and Ryeowook walked in.

"Sorry," he told the professor, looking thoroughly remorseful. "I was studying, and I lost track of time."

"Well, Jongwoon will tell you the task." The professor stepped around the Hufflepuff and paused at the doorway. "Can you try to get through this without killing each other?"

"Definitely, professor," Ryeowook assured him with a bright smile. The professor nodded and left.

"We have to--" Yesung started to explain, but Ryeowook cut him off.

"I already know. I was standing outside the door."

"Oh." Yesung shoved the box in his direction. "Then we should get started."

Ryeowook said nothing, but reached into the box.

They worked silently for about an hour before Yesung finally spoke.

"Do you have any 'd's?"

No response.

"Um, how about 'f's?"

Nothing.

"What is your problem?" Yesung asked, gritting his teeth. Ryeowook kept his head down as he flipped through the pages of the book, pointedly ignoring Yesung. The older boy stood up abruptly and circled around the desk. He ripped the book from Ryeowook's hands and tossed it across the room. Ryeowook looked up at Yesung blankly.

"What is your problem?" He asked, standing up to go get the book. Yesung stepped in front of him.

"Are you still bitter about yesterday?" Yesung asked, scowling. "Because we didn't even talk about it at all."

"What is there to say?" Ryeowook pushed around Yesung and bent to pick up the heavy volume.

"A lot, actually!" Yesung declared. "Why did you do it?!"

"I thought that would be obvious." Ryeowook set the book back onto his desk, but Yesung shoved it back off.

"Not to me."

"But I told you last night. Were you even listening?"

"Yes, but..."

"Then why are you asking me to say it again? It's already embarrassing enough as it is."

"What, it's embarrassing to like me? I'm not that bad."

"Why are you rubbing this in my face?" Ryeowook slammed the book down, his eyes glinting as he turned to Yesung.

"What? How am--" Yesung was taken aback by the younger boy's anger.

"People don't usually like to talk about being rejected with the person who rejected them, okay? Don't you have any tact?" Ryeowook interrupted, leaning against the desk. Yesung blinked at him before closing the distance between them. He leaned his face in until they were mere centimeters apart, pleased by the quickening of the Hufflepuff's breath.

"You didn't even give me a chance to respond," Yesung whispered.

"Oh," was all Ryeowook could say in reply before Yesung softly pressed their lips together. They sprang apart when someone cleared their throat loudly. Their professor stood in the doorway, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Detention again tomorrow, boys," he said before the door closed behind him, leaving the two boys flushed with embarrassment.

"We're never going to get out of detention," Yesung sighed as they left the detention room.

"Gee, darn," Ryeowook smiled and slipped his hand into Yesung's, and Yesung had no choice but to agree. "Your hands are awfully small."

"Shut up," Yesung scowled, pulling his hand away. "Your little boyfriend's eyes are awfully small."

"There's no comparison that goes with the eyes, but the hands...?" Ryeowook linked their arms together, laughing.

"It's not true," Yesung argued.

"Prove it," taunted Ryeowook.

"Okay." Yesung steered them over to a deserted hallway and pulled open a random door. He shoved Ryeowook inside and closed the door behind them just as two other students stepped out of an adjacent door.

"Did you hear something?" Siwon asked Hankyung, flattening his hair down with his hands.

"Nope," Hankyung assured him, looking quite satisfied with himself. He reached over and fixed Siwon's collar.

"We should get back to patrolling." Siwon turned on his heel and marched down the hall.

Hankyung smirked and followed, muttering to himself. "That's what you said twenty minutes ago..."
