It should have been obvious. He should have known from the start.

Here they were, lounging on Sam's couch, beers on the table and pizza on the way. The game had started and Spike's eyes were laser-focused on the TV. The Leafs were down by one-already-someplace so arid you'd think they'd never heard of ice that didn't come with a scotch.

A linesman called icing and play stopped. Spike's hand wandered unconsciously to rest on Sam's thigh.

And suddenly Sam knew. That final realization when all the pieces fit together flawlessly and all that's left is to admit the terrifying truth.

Now was as good a time as any. He took a breath.

"The Leafs suck," he said. Coward.

Spike swivelled his head and levelled Sam with a glare.

"Hey," he said, and punched Sam playfully on the shoulder. "Shut up."

Sam obeyed. He shifted on the couch, letting his weight fall onto Spike's shoulder.

Spike's attention was back on the screen, where the Leafs had managed to win the faceoff and keep possession all the way into the offensive zone. But Sam felt the hand on his thigh squeeze lightly, and he smiled. Spike knew too.
