At the time of writing this, CBC news says there are 333 forest fires burning in BC. Saturday morning we here on the island saw our first day of rain since July 1st. BC has an annual wildfire season, it's expected and budgeted for, it's a fact. One of the worse seasons recently was in 2003. Fires crop up mostly in the southern interior, but right now there are a few on the island too. Many are started by lightning strikes, but some are man-made. If it's found that you are responsible for causing a fire, such as by tossing a cigarette butt out the window of a car, you can be fined up to $1 million, and serve three years in jail. But that's all PSA stuff.
The weird thing this year is the haze. There have been a few air quality advisory notices here and there, but it's most noticeable at sunrise. Now this year doesn't seem to be shaping up too badly in terms of severity, but I don't remember seeing the sun quite like this before.
This is from 6.43 Friday morning, 49 minutes after sunrise.
And you know what else is weird? Racoons. I hadn't heard from them in months, and then all of a sudden they eat all our peaches.
So what was once this:
Is now this:
Stripy faced bastards.
