The Summer of Television '10: Farscape
I feel like I should be laughing manically. Or maybe not me, but somebody. I don’t know who, but somewhere there should be maniacal laughter. I’ll figure this out later. I’ve had some kind of weird, indescribable reaction to this show, but don’t worry, I don’t think it’s contagious.
FARSCAPE. I don’t know what to say.
Other sci-fi shows, SG1, for example, start out with Normal people doing Normal things in a Normal place, and then slowly but surely they get sucked into something Weird. After that point the Weird takes over, but there’s usually a little Normal thrown in every episode to keep the audience (and the characters) grounded. You get an introduction to the Weird: how, why, who, what, where, etc. Things are explained.
And then there’s Farscape. Imagine you turn on the TV and start watching a show that you instantly love for no apparent reason, and it starts a bit more like this: Я ГОВОРЮ ПО-РУССКИ. ВЫ ГОВОРИТЕ ПО-ПУССКИ? НЕТ? ОЧЕНЬ ЖАЛЬ.
Or, in English: here’s a Normal guy, BUT NOW HE’S ROCKETING OFF INTO SPACE AND BEING SUCKED INTO A WORMHOLE AND HE’S OUT THE OTHER SIDE AND EVERYONE’S GONE AND NOW THERE ARE ALIENS AND HE’S ON THEIR SHIP AND NOW HE’S BEEN INJECTED WITH NANOS AND CAN TELL WHAT EVERYONE’S SAYING BUT NOW PEOPLE ARE CHASING HIM AND THEY MEET MORE ALIENS AND NOW THERE ARE WEIRD FOREIGN BODILY FUNCTIONS TO WORRY ABOUT AND NOW THE SHIP HE’S FLYING AROUND IN IS FUCKING PREGNANT AND - are you getting all this?
And I love it. Love it, love it, love it. (Я люблю Фарскайп.)
I would have been nine years old when this started, and while I can’t really see myself watching it back then, I now happily consider it a part of my 90s phase. I ripped through the first season (and the season two premiere... what? The season one finale was a cliffhanger!) thanks to... well, someone. I wanted to post this before starting season two, so I’ve been on a bit of a break for the last... few weeks. I knew I’d get around to it eventually.
