Good times at open skate yesterday. Yeah, there was the usual assortment of irritating children, but it was much less crowded than it usually is. Frankly I was so pleased with my progress on skates that I wasn't too terribly bothered by them. Yeah, they got in my way, but I was doing turn-around toe-stops without losing my balance! That rules!
My favorite part is when they do "age skates"--10 and under, 11-16, and 17 and older. They always pick some classic 70s musical chestnut for we oldsters to skate to, which is fun. And since there are never many adults actually skating there, the rink is clear enough that I can really open it up. I love to pick up a good head of steam, haul ass down the straightaway, then lean way into my crossovers like I'm damn
Apolo Anton Ohno on quads or something. Yesterday as I was blowing past the kids lined up along the wall watching, I heard one of them say: "Wow, that girl with the pads is fast!" I scoffed a bit because, kids,
you ain't seen fast. But I also grinned inwardly at the compliment.
Also good for some private amusement: I was rocking
my new t-shirt yesterday in an effort to scandalize the soccer moms. I came up with the idea for it months ago and my boss finally took it upon himself to CafePress the thing. I didn't hear any maternal clucks of distaste in my direction (I'm guessing they didn't get it), but wearing it entertained me just the same.
I'm heading up to Philly on Sunday for the
ECE. I wish I could go both days, but I've got Job #2 on Saturday. But I have next Monday off so I'll be able to stay late and get all the derby goodness I want without having to worry about an early wakeup call. I'm psyched to see the Maulers, natch, but I also can't wait to see the CCRG scrimmage team in action and the CCRG girls skating in the pickups. I also want to see
DC in action since I can't make their expo bout. It's all going to be hella sweet. I think I'm going to bring my big (read: film) camera for it.
