Fanboy (girl?) news briefs

Australasia is irking my fanboy cookies in general today.

Jackson says he won't be making `Hobbit'

Okay, so I dig me some Lord of the Rings action, and I was looking forward to the prospect of a Hobbit movie--mostly because I hated the book, but if anyone can make it palatable, it's PJ. But if he's not doing it, then forget it. I'll just cast my lot with the rest of the Harry Potter movies.

{sigh} Sometimes I wonder if I'm just an extremely nerdy 12-year-old boy trapped in a 27-year-old woman's body.

Olympic swimming champion Ian Thorpe retires

To contradict my previous statement about being a 12-year-old boy, I {heart} me some foxy Ian Thorpe. As someone who spent the better part of her life swimming competitively and resenting all those varsity athletes that were taken more seriously for doing a "real" sport, it's nice to have a swimmer get the kind of recognition ball-playing athletes get, even if it only happens once every four years. Ian Thorpe is as close to a sports idol as you're going to get in swimming, partly because he's a world record holder several times over and partly because he brings teh hott both in the pool and out of it, which is tough to accomplish. Most swimmers have a Michael Phelps complex, in which they look fucking awesome in the pool or in an aquatic environment, but pretty awkward when seen in civilian threads. It doesn't help that most Olympic caliber swimmers are, for all intents and purposes, genetic freaks. The best freestylers are obscenely tall, dramatically V-shaped, and possess big hands and feet. Awesome in the water (and when shirtless and in a Speedo), but it doesn't translate well on dry land. That and not many can pull off chlorine-damaged hair.

But Ian is wet/dry hot and he has the adorable Aussie accent. The crispy chlorine hair just looks right when matched with his perpetually Aussie-tanned complexion. And did I mention he can swim? Like a mofo? Whew! So hot! But now he's quitting competitive swimming! Who will I ogle in 2008?

So yeah, no Hobbit and no Thorpedo. Sons of New Zealand and Australia... you're breaking my heart.
