Tropical storm Ernesto was actually very pleasant. It was nothing more than a drawn out thunderstorm. Winds never reached above 20 mph, and although we were forecast to see 4-10" of rain, we really only got about 2". I knew it wasn't going to be a big deal, even with every news barbie screeching out evacuation orders between home depot commercials. Since Katrina pretty much exposed the government's inability (at all levels) to function after a major storm, there was a lot of overcompensation (and sickening pre-election self-promotion, I might add) leading up to Ernesto. A state of emergency was declared from Key West to West Palm, and mandatory evacuation orders were sent out to coastal residents but, you know what? The cable didn't even go out in Broward or Dade, and we got the most dangerous bit, i.e. 'the deadly semi-circle'. I swear, it was such a non-event the library didn't even bother suspending due-dates like they normally do after storms.
Anyway, there is no median; our government operates on either of two levels: total complacency, or panic. It is better to be safe than sorry, true, but that's no reason to waste people's time, money and energy over a really big rainstorm.

Oh, and thanks to everyone for completely ignoring my movie script. We could have had something big. When I commit it to tape and sell it to Hollywood, I will become rich and famous. Will any of you be mentioned in my Oscar acceptance speech? No.

*sniffles*
