Cynical Beast's Rape in Manga and Fanfics Rant

Jun 03, 2010 20:09

Disclaimer: I totally love Yaoi and Yuri to death. I just see tons of fanfictions and manga that really grind my gears. A rant I saw over in fanficrants made me want to write this, so the ideas expressed are somewhat borrowed.

I am going to seriously bite someone's head off. Actually, I am too much of a wuss to do something like that. Well anyway onto the rant part. Lalala....

Well, I am going to start this off by saying. I read tons of yaoi. I have so much doujinshi stored away on my computer, that pretty soon I might need an external hard drive to store all of it. Needless to say I read a ton of manga and read lots of fanfiction. Most of it I read for the lulz and do not bother to take seriously. Now it's time to cut to the chase.

Once again I am going to be SLAMMING several things here.

Alright, so I decided that Hot Gimmick looked like a good manga. I went over to onemanga.com, (I only read the first few chapters to decide whether I am interested in it or not) and it seemed interesting enough. Alright, so after a while, I go out and get a bunch of the volumes. Brilliant right? WRONG! As soon as I finished it I was rather disturbed. The main character, Hatsumi, is manipulated into a relationship by this total bastard (Ryoki), who attempts to rape her. I thought at the end her character would develop and leave Ryoki for a guy who cared about her or remained single for a while. I thought that at least she'd go with Shingou, who seemed to want the very best for her. Boy was I wrong. Ryoki manipulates the crap out of her, tries to rape her, but saves her from being gang-raped by Asuza's henchmen. Therefore she falls in love with him. Also, at one point it gave me the "No means yes" vibe which creeped me out. The idea that someone would stay with a manipulative asshole like him pisses me off.

In Kannazuki No Miko Chikane rapes Himeko. That totally pissed me off. If you love someone you would not force them to have sex with you or harm them. I'm also looking at Gravitation. Yuki's acts seem somewhat I dunno, non-consensual.

Now, your welcome to like whatever you like. I am just going to say that, sometimes people do not portray couples realistically. That can be dangerous for younger readers. I read Gravitation and Hot Gimmick when I was much younger, around the time they first came out in the US. I also watched the anime. When I was younger I thought, that it was the way normal homosexual relationships are. It most certainly is not.

As someone who was in a controlling relationship for quite a while and went after someone who promised to get me out then wound up being manipulated by them. I think I am qualified to say pressuring someone and manipulating someone into doing something that they do not want to do is definitely not acceptable behavior. Raping someone is terrible and that should not be portrayed as a normal and acceptable behavior. Read all the smut you want, just keep that in mind.
