A lot of people, chiefest among them my beautiful fiancée, wonder why I am so obsessed with Helen Mirren, why I think she is definitely in the top ten of my sexiest women to ever walk the face of the earth. True, she was born as World War II raged across Europe, true she is now a sexagenarian, true she looked less than fabulous in her role as Queen Elizabeth II. There is still something about her that would entice me to see that new movie starring her and, of all people, Russell Crowe AND Ben Affleck.
Well, as usual, somebody far brighter and more talented than yours truly (imagine that) summed it up in a way that suddenly made me realize why.
Russell Brand did an interview on Fresh Air with Terri Gross on NRP last weekend, and among his witty and poignant responses, he made the following comments:
"'Oh, it’s been lovely working with you Dame Helen Mirren, for in your eyes,' I silently reflect, 'does the Oedipus complex seem bizarrely logical.' This powerful matriarch, this goddess, this reason to align maternity with sexuality."
See, it's not my fault at all. It's Frued's. Just like my cocaine addiction. OK, just kidding there, but, for real, doesn't that make some sense?
Or is it just that I used to wank (since I'm already going British) to images of her in her earlier movies when I was just barely old enough to know what wanking was?
