3 movies

The 75th and final movie I saw in 2005 was King Kong. I thought the movie was excellent, although overlong. The movie could undoubtedly have been cut by 30 minutes and been better for it. They could have axed the bugs in the ravine. Much of the criticism I have read of the film has been... odd. Why it is a bad thing that Kong doesn't appear for the first 70 minutes? Didn't these people see Aliens? They don't make first contact in that movie for 70 minutes, and nobody complains there. As a side note, the director's cut of Aliens stupidly shows a facehugger in the first 5 minutes, which I think is a major failing. Anyway, returning to Kong. The CGI is gorgeous, Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody and Jack Black all turn in brilliant performances and Kong is *alive*. See this in theaters if you can, otherwise DVD it on a big TV with good sound.

BTW, Peter Jackson's Dead Alive aka Braindead is showing at the Ground Floor Theater in Coventry on Thursday at 7:30. They have B-movies every Thursday.

The first two movies I saw in 2006 were at the Cinematheque. The first, Kidnapping Express, is most successful film in Venezuelan history. It outlines a kidnapping that goes... weird. Drugs, sex, corruption, bribery, honor and betrayal are all on display. This is a film that any Quentin Tarantino buff would love and I recommend highly recommend that you catch it on DVD.

The second film was Touch the Sound, which is a documentary about the profoundly deaf Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie. The percussion music is quite beautiful, otherwise the movie is terribly boring and not worth seeing. Avoid it.

As is usual at this time of year there are tons of movies that I want to see and not early enough time to see them all. Here are some upcoming flicks I want to see.

Cinematheque:
Dear Wendy - 1/15
In Cold Blood - 1/19
Colossus of Rhodes - 1/27
Rules of the Game - 1/30
Februrary's schedule is amazing!

CWRUFilm
The Goebbels Experiment 1/18 ( put on by CMA )
SciFi Marathon 1/20-1/22 - Includes the original King Kong!

Commercial ( in no particular order ):
Capote, Munich, Pride & Prejudice, Brokeback Mountain, Match Point, Syriana

Coming soonish: 2005 Movie Year in Review. I already did my top 10. Just need to get the rest put together. The list of "Movies I Wish I Had Seen" is quite long and depressing.
