I saw the first 3 hours of
The Best of Youth at the Cinematheque today. This movie is fucking brilliant and I highly recommend it. It is one of the best new* movies I have ever seen at the Cinematheque, right up there with
Show Me Love,
Lilya 4-Ever, and
Das Experiment, to mention a few other highlights.
I am catching hopefully catching part 2 Sunday night or failing that on Tuesday night. If you can make it to Part 1 on Monday and Part 2 on Tuesday I *highly* recommend it. Or make immediate plans to get in on DVD when it becomes available.
I will not attempt to describe this movie.
Ebert does it better anyway. Oh yeah, and it's in subtitles, so those of you who can't stand subtitles will miss out on a very beautiful film, unless you speak fluent Italian. That's your problem. This is the first film where I wanted to go up to John Ewing, the Cinematheque director, and personally thank him for bringing it to town.
*As in brand new in the last year instead of being a re-release as when they show Kurosawa or other classic directors. Comparing just about anything to Kurosawa makes the comparison film look bad, so I try not to do it.
