Happy 10th Dateaversary!

Mar 03, 2024 22:18

On this date in 2014, I met my M in person for the first time. At the time I was in the midst of Fail Faster Dating, so I was going on a lot of first dates and occasional second/third/beyond dates. Most of these dates were lined up via OKCupid, which was my dating app of choice.

I wrote to M first, because her profile mentioned that she had a Guatemalan street dog who "she had bribed back to America with the promise that the streets were paved with Snausage" and I thought that was funny and indicative of someone who would get along with my big dumb dog.

Our first date was at Pacific East in Coventry, which is actually on the complete opposite side of town from where we both lived at the time. This was because I had tickets that night to see We Were Promised Jetpacks that night, and given that her profile said she liked concerts I figured the best case scenario was that she might go to the show with me after dinner.

Neither of us remembers what we talked about during dinner, but we presume it was ordinary first date stuff. Somewhat hilariously, I actually remember better what I said to another woman in the restaurant. M was late. There was another woman there alone who looked something like M's picture, so I went and asked if she was M. She was not, but if I recall correctly that woman was there waiting for her date from some dating app so it was an easy mistake.

M was wearing a really cute brown hat, which disappeared shortly after that date and was not seen again. M ended up buying a replacement a few years ago from a website designed to let you buy clothes from specific years. I wore my usual jeans and a WRUW hoodie concert uniform.

After dinner that night M joined me at the concert for a bit. 10 years and one wedding and one kid later, M, Birdie and I returned to Pacific East for dinner after some interesting complications. Birdie spent most of the day with a runny nose (non-contagious according to the urgent care yesterday), but recovered for the evening. We got most of the way to the restaurant before we both realized that we'd forgotten our wallet. Or more accurately, I forgot my wallet for the first time in... years? Decades? A long time. And M didn't bring hers because she knew I always had mine! We went home, grabbed the wallet, went back to Coventry and had a very nice sushi dinner somewhat later than we'd expected. M brought her replacement cute brown hat, but forgot it in the car when we parked, which is very on brand for that hat.

When we got home a few minutes ago, while we were taking our shoes and coats off Birdie suddenly said "Happy dateaversary!" That was a nice touch.

By mutual agreement, we opted to skip Valentine's day for Dateaversary, which we had not previously celebrated. In addition to dinner M got flowers on Friday night and a surprise gift on Saturday (I took her to a frame shop to get a treasured print framed finally). All of this was spliced around having a friend over for dinner on Friday, Shabbat Tots and lunch/dessert with my cousin/aunt on Saturday followed by the surprise frame shop, and a WRUW outing that was rescheduled for Saturday night at the last second. It's been a busy but very good weekend.
