Two of my daughter's recent obsessions are windmills and water towers. If we drive anywhere and happen to pass either one, she gets very excited. This weekend was full of both windmills and water towers without our quite intending it.
On Saturday, we went to the free day sponsored by NASA at the
Great Lakes Science Center. This required driving past the "big blue water tower" (Birdie's words) that is along the shore way. From there, we drove past the tall white windmill in front of the museum. Later in our visit, we walked out the front door of the museum and let Birdie hug that windmill, which was very exciting to her. This was Birdie's second trip to the Great Lakes Science Center. She has fun throughout the museum, but she really enjoys the ball pit in the polymers section and the drum kit in the "science of rock & roll" area.
On Sunday, we headed east on I-90 to the Lake County Farmpark. This required passing both the water tower and the windmill from Saturday. Then out near the intersection of I-90 and I-270 are three more windmills. Birdie refers to these as the "mommy and baby windmill" and the "daddy windmill" as there are two taller windmills, one of which is paired with a much shorter windmill. There's also a small water tower near these windmills.
The Farmpark itself has two additional windmills at a much smaller scale. We were waiting for the horse-drawn wagon ride when Birdie noticed the taller of them through the trees and she immediately was very excited. Throughout the rest of our visit the various animals were a distant third to the windmills, which to be fair were a distant second to the many different playgrounds scattered throughout the farmpark.
I don't know how long this windmill & water tower obsession will continue, but it's lasted several months now and shows no signs of abating. Whenever we drive by one we make sure to point out which window she'll need to look through to see it. We do also point out other things, but these are the ones that have stuck the most firmly. I assume that this interest in windmills and water towers is not actually related to her
joy earlier this year in the letter 'W', but I can't rule it out.
