Last year we signed up for a
share from a Community Supported Fishery or CSF. That continues to go very well, so we decided to try out a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) this summer. This has been on my list of "I should do that one day," and one day has finally arrived.
After due consideration of the available options we went with
City Fresh. Multiple of my friends had recommended it, and it had better options for choosing only the weeks that we were going to be in town. The pickup is at the main branch of the Lakewood library, which is closer to my house than the other CSA's pick up site was.
The first share was last Thursday. We got:
- strawberries
- radishes
- bibb lettuce
- The inevitable kale
- A yellow summer squash
- ramps
- A large onion
I don't much care for yellow summer squash, but everything else is easy enough for us to use, and we have been.
My biggest concern about the CSA was using stuff we didn't have planned. Historically, this has been a weakness of my cooking style, which is more "ok, let's buy the ingredients we need for
the meals we have planned" than "let's improvise based on what we have." With the CSF this wasn't a problem because the fish goes right in the freezer for future meal planning. This is not normally an option for fresh produce, so we'll see how well I do going forward. We have shares out through December so I've got plenty of time to practice!
