Obituary Collection: Barry Kossover
My paternal grandfather had at least four first cousins. When I was a kid, these were known as "the cousins in Massachusetts who spelled their last name wrong." I eventually found that one of them, Calvin, was living in the Cleveland area (which is a whole other story), and through him I met his siblings Barry and Annette. The fourth cousin, Stephen, passed away long before I met Calvin.
Anyway, I met Barry and his wife and daughters through Calvin, and last saw them at Calvin's funeral in 2007. Calvin's obituary does not appear to be online, but Barry's is on the Salem News website.
Danvers - Barry Sheldon Kossover, a resident of Danvers, passed away on April 17, 2014.
Born April 6, 1947 in Boston, he was the son of the late Jack and Florence (Dubin) Kossover. He was a longtime resident of Salem and Beverly.
Barry was a 1964 graduate of Salem High School, and 1968 graduate of Salem State College, with a BS in Business Administration. After completing college, he entered the Army where he was a member of the 181st Light Infantry Brigade and trained as an NCO in public information. Just prior to his discharge, he was the recipient of a good conduct medal. He earned his MBA from Suffolk University in 1972.
For several years, he managed real estate, and in 1976 he took over his father’s business, where he owned and operated Dave & Jack’s Service Station in Salem until his retirement in 2004. He was a board member of the Salem Boys & Girls Club, member and former twice Master as well as Past District Deputy Grand Secretary of the Essex Lodge AFAM Salem 8th Masonic District, and a 32nd Shriner. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, and a longtime member of Temple B’nai Abraham in Beverly, where he served on the board and was also president of the Brotherhood. Most recently, he served as president on the board of his condominium association.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 39 years, Patricia (Carr) Kossover, formerly of Everett. He was the father of Kimberlee Meredith Kossover Hansen, and husband Daniel and Tiffany Leigh Kossover Finn and husband Steven. Also survived by his pride and joy - his two sweet and loving grandchildren, Izaac Jae Finn and Lucy Bjørg Hansen. He is also survived by his only sister, Annette, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his beloved goddaughter, Jennifer Maguire. He was predeceased by his brothers, Calvin and Stephen Kossover.
ARRANGEMENTS: Services at the Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin St., Salem, on Sunday at 1 p.m. Interment following at Sons of Jacob Cemetery, Danvers. The family will be at the home of Kimberlee and Daniel Hansen to receive relatives and friends on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 150 Cambridge Park Drive, Suite 202, Cambridge, MA 02140 or the charity of your choice.
