A Rainbow of Birds

M really went all in on decorating Birdie's room with a bird theme, including several bird themed pieces of art and some bird knickknack on a shelf. Among the decorations featured is a little flock of six cloth birds hanging underneath three white clouds that she found on Etsy. I believe they were made by someone in the U.K.. The six birds feature the main colors of the rainbow (sorry, Indigo) and are hanging above the changing table in rainbow order. Before they made it on to the wall, they were spread out on a blanket as a backdrop for the birth announcement that we sent out.

One of M's more delightful habits involves those birds. Every time she changes Birdie's diaper, she picks Birdie up at the end and points at each of the birds in turn, saying "red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple." When she gets to purple she holds Birdie near the bird, and lets her bat it. I don't usually remember to do this little routine when I change Birdie's diaper, but when I do sometimes I throw a curve in there and do the colors in Spanish.

It's not specifically bird related, but we've found that when changing Birdie giving her a book helps. She'll lie on her back and look at the book while we take care of business. M noted that she gets a very intent look on her fact while she's reading in this pose, kind of like a little old man in the schvitz. Of course, some days she's not in the mood for reading or really cooperating at all, and on those days the book hits the floor. Typically on those days you spend a lot of effort trying to keep her from standing up to hit the birds on her own!
