I posted this on Facebook last month, but in the interest of making it easy for me to find later, I'll posting it here as well.
In
2019 I saw
Pelican at the Grog Shop on Sunday, September 22. On April 15, they released a
live album from that show. Unfortunately, it's
digital only, and I don't buy digital, but it's still exciting that a show I was at got turned into a legitimate live album.
This is the second time that has happened. Back in
2012, I saw the
Cloud Nothings on Thursday, April 5 at the Grog Shop. That show was
also released as a live album. I was shut out of the original limited vinyl pressing, but much later I acquired a bootleg copy somewhere which is one of the very few pieces of vinyl I own.
Given the larger number of shows I've seen (
206 at the Beachland alone), I'm actually a little surprised this number isn't higher. There have been a few times when I went to a tour that got turned into the live album, but so far as I can tell none of the shows I've been at were parts of those albums. This is particularly disappointing for
The Tigers Have Spoken, which is a great live album. At least one of the
Black Keys Agora shows was visibly being video recorded, but as far as I know nothing ever came from that.
I'm sure some shows I've been to have decent bootlegs floating around (the Black Keys were taper friendly for years, as is Mike Doughty), but that's not quite the sames as an official release. Similarly, the
Pixies show I saw in 2004 was selling an "official live album from that night" as we left, but it's not on the
Discogs list (although other shows from that tour are), and I suspect it wasn't super high quality anyway.
In any event, me being at a show that got turned into a live album will never be boring.
