You Are What You Eat: November 17 through November 23

Nov 24, 2019 19:31

More birthday related dining led to a higher than usual number of restaurants. I've had worse problems.

Sunday, November 17 - As a conclusion to M's birthday weekend, I made her favorite recipe, which is the Pan Seared Sea Scallops from 660 Curries. It was the second time this year I had made them, and they are still her favorite.

Monday, November 18 - Way back in January I made Slow-Cooker Chicken Cacciatore with Polenta. I hauled it out for the second time today, and it continues to a delicious way to utilize the slow cooker to make copious amounts of food.

Tuesday, November 19 - This week's batch of tacos came from Smitten Kitchen. The recipe is titled Spaghetti Squash and Black Bean Tacos with Queso Fresco but in the interests of full disclosure, I used cotija cheese instead. I'd made these before, and they continue to be a winner.

Wednesday, November 20 - I hit all three of my main cookbooks this week when I turned to Moosewood Favorites for the Winter Salad Plate, which involves beets (M loves beets), goat cheese (M loves goat cheese), red onions (M really loves red onions) and toasted walnuts (yep), as well a nice home made vinaigrette. It was a winner. I'm somewhat surprised I hadn't already made it this year.

A long time ago I snagged this Roasted Garlic recipe from a random internet search. I roasted up most of a large bulb and we had it with crusty bread, which also wiped up the vinaigrette nicely. It had been a long time since I had made this, and I shouldn't let it be that long again!

Thursday, November 21 - My old team at work got together for a lunch at Taki's Greek Kitchen. I had a couscous salad that was fine and some fried cheese that was delicious. It's not too shabby. I'd go back.

The ice cream joint down the street was closed so we pivoted to the Malley's in Bay Village, which is more or less identical to the Malley's in Lakewood so will count as my third trip there for the year.

For dinner, for second time this year I went to 660 Curries for the Sweet & Sour Chickpeas. The spice level was better adjusted this time around.

I also roasted some pumpkin seeds using a random find from AllRecipes.com. That used up most of our jack-o-lantern seeds. I'd never actually done this before that I can recall, so I'll count it as a (very easy) new recipe.

Friday, November 22 - After an evening at the art museum, we went to Kintaro for the second time this year at M's request and had all you can eat sushi. We got our money's worth.

Saturday, November 23 - For lunch M and I took my aunt out to Taza in Woodmere. Taza is essentially an upscale Aladdin's. The hummus was above average, and M reports the same of the baga. The falafel were actually quite good, but M says the chicken shawarma wasn't nearly as good as Assad's. Given the multitude of options for Lebanese food near my house I wouldn't rush back, but I wouldn't avoid it either.

For dinner, I met Eli down at the Cinematheque for a samurai film, namely the great Sanjuro. Before dinner, we relived college and split a pizza at Mama Santa's in Little Italy. We were both a little surprised to find that the pizza, which in undergrad had the virtue of being cheap and not much else, was actually quite good. Sadly, it was somewhat more expensive than I recalled it, but it was still pretty cheap for all that.
