Q1 and Q2 Down, Bring on Q3 Concert Calendar

Jun 22, 2019 22:56

It's been nearly four months since my last concert calendar, and in the year to date I've only seen nine gigs with fifteen bands. That's due largely to three factors:
- The tickets I have cued up are all very expensive shows. And that doesn't include the MLB All-Star game, which I was able to score tickets to see.
- I've done two expensive projects on my house this year, with one more to come, not to mention the new roommate. That has all sucked up money and almost more importantly, attention.
- Laziness. Writing up these things is a lot of work!

Well, the last one at least I can do something about. Here's the next iteration of the concert calendar. As always, Bold means I'm going, Italics means I'm more than usually interested, and I'm going to list all sorts of things just because it might be fun on my radio show.

June
Su 6/23 - Juliana Hatfield @ MBCH. Wish I'd caught that one earlier, her new album was fun.
R 6/27 - Black Magic Flower Power @ Beachland Tavern. $12 bet on a heavy sounding rock band, and I've got Friday off anyway.
R 6/27 - Tower of Power @ PSQ (Tri-C JazzFest). I've been playing some of their hit albums on my show, and they're pretty sweet, honestly.
F 6/28 - Bela Fleck & the Flecktones w/John Scofield's Combo 66 @ PSQ (Tri-C JazzFest). Fortunately, I'm out of town so I don't have to think about spending the money, because the Flecktones are great!
S 6/29 - Dressy Bessy @ Beachland Tavern. Indie rock. The first time I saw them they had Immaculate Machine open for them, who may be the greatest opener I've ever seen (w/apologies to Sarah Harmer). The second time I saw them had more WRUW staff members at it than nearly any other show I've seen. Alas, this won't be the third time.

July
W 7/03 - The Rolling Stones @ Fed Ex Field in DC. It got rescheduled from May when Mick Jagger had a heart procedure. It must not have been serious. M and I will be there.
F 7/05 - Rocky Colavito @ PSQ. Kick off All-Star weekend with a Q&A with famed Indians slugger Rocky Colavito.
S 7/06 - Bernie Williams @ Nighttown. Yes, the former Yankees centerfielder. He's now a jazz musician. I don't know how to respond to that.
S 7/06 - Weird Al @ PSQ. With strings.
Su 7/07 - T 7/09 - The Baseball Project @ Rock Hall. Three shows in three days, all inconveniently placed. I may well bail out of work to see this. Maybe they'll play this!
M 7/08 - Los Campesinos! @ Grog Shop. Indie rock. One of four gigs they play all year. Were great when I saw them.
M 7/08 - The Beths @ Musica. Brandt would like you to know that the best indie rock band of the last year is coming to the area again and you should all check it out.
W 7/10 - Tal National @ Transformer Station (City Stages). Free. West African.
R 7/11 - Heart Bones @ Beachland Tavern. One of the member is in A Giant Dog and Sweet Spirit, and the description promises weirdness.
R 7/11 - The Fabulous Thunderbirds @ MBCH. For a long time, I had mistakenly confused them with Robert Palmer, specifically "Simply Irresistible", and once I realized my mistake I lost interest. Weird, right?
F 7/12 - Dave Alvin @ Beachland Ballroom. Ex-Blasters, Ex-X. Touring on an anniversary of his own solo album.
F 7/12 - Queensryche @ Rocksino. Prog metal legends. Ok, so possible the only one in the genre it seems sometimes.
Su 7/14 - TWRP w/The Protomen @ Beachland Ballroom. TWRP describes themselves as an "Elite squad of Rock Stars from the future!". The Protomen do prog rock albums about Megaman, among other things, and were quite when I saw them live a few years ago.
W 7/17 - Combo Chimbita @ Beachland Tavern. Looks well worth a $14 bet on psychedelia with a tinge of first people sounds. Sure, why not?
W 7/17 - Soccer Mommy w/Heavenly Creatures @ Rock Hall. Indie rock on the way up, paired with local favorites.
R 7/18 - The Soul Rebels @ Beachland Ballroom. The New Orleans sound mixed with hip-hop and a lot of other stuff.
F 7/19 - Belle & Sebastian @ HOB (Grog Shop show). Once was good for me, but M will be there.
F 7/19 - The Psychedelic Furs @ Agora Theatre.
W 7/24 - Durand Jones & The Indications @ Beachland Ballroom. The first album was throwback soul in the spirit of Sharon Jones. The second album was a little more modern sounding, which is less to my taste but an understandable career choice..
W 7/24 - Garifuna Collective @ Transformer Station (City Stages). Free. Central American.
W 7/24 - The Buttertones @ Grog Shop. Rock, described as Lynchian. I'll probably listen at least once.
W 7/24 - Lyle Lovett & His Large Band @ Cain Park. I really enjoyed them when I saw them at the Rocksino. I'm giving away tickets one of the Sundays prior.
F 7/26 - Snail Mail @ Beachland Ballroom. Indie rock on the way up.
S 7/28 - Air Supply @ Cain Park. Did you know they had as many top 5 singles as The Beatles? That factoid blew my mind.
T 7/30 - Nilüfer Yanya @ Grog Shop. Out of London. Listed for this excerpt from the bio: ideas "of paranoid thoughts and anxiety" a theme that runs through the album, not least in its conceptual spoken word interludes which emanate from a fictional health management company WWAY HEALTH TM."
W 7/31 - BKO @ Transformer Station (City Stages). Free. Malian.

August
R 8/01 - A Giant Dog @ The Happy Dog. Name appropriate to the venue!
F 8/02 - Thunderpussy @ Grog Shop. Four women fucking up rock stereotypes, or so claims their bio.
F 8/02 - The Waco Brothers @ MBCH. Bloodshot Records stalwarts.
F 8/02 - 90's Kickback Concert @ PSQ. Exactly the kind of thing that lets me program an entire show with 90s R&B/pop. Features: Ginuwine, Next, Case, H Town, Shai, 702, Michel'le and Adina Howard.
Su 8/04 - Heart & Joan Jet w/Elle King @ Blossom. M and I have lawn tickets with at least three other people. If you're going, let us know!
T 8/06 - John Mayall @ Kent Stage. You could make a strong case that he's the most influential UK rocker, given all the people who played for him over the years.
W 8/07 - The John Butler Trio @ HOB. The Australian Dave Mathews is both semi-accurate and very inadequate.
W 8/07 - Santana @ Blossom. Honestly, I feel like he probably puts on a pretty good show.
R 8/08 - Lucinda Williams @ MBCH. Another anniversary tour, this one for Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I wonder who did the first anniversary tour of that type?
F 8/09 - Interpol @ Rock Hall. I saw them three times, twice with my ex, and I couldn't tell you one thing about their music.
S 8/10 - Bad Religion @ Agora Theatre. Once was enough for me, but if you haven't seen them and have a yen for political punk, go for it.
T 8/13 - Summer Cannibals @ Mahall's Locker Room. My friend Faith says they are great.
T 8/13 - The Bird And The Bee @ Beachland Tavern. Sort of folk/jazz/poppy stuff. They've had a couple of interesting albums.
T 8/13 - The Bouncing Souls @ Grog Shop. Already sold out though.
R 8/15 - India.Arie @ Cain Park. I'm pretty sure I can work her into a set along the way.
R 8/15 - The Del McCoury Band @ MBCH. He's 80, so if he's on your bucket list you might want to get on it.
F 8/16 & S 8/17 - Ted Leo & the Pharmacists @ Grog Shop. Come prepared and you might be able to sing on their random cover of the night.
S 8/17 - The Zombies @ Rock Hall. Now that they are Rock Hall inductees, I assume their already expensive tickets will be even dearer.
S 8/17 - Iron Maiden @ PPG Paints Area Pittsburgh. Up the Irons! It's a greatest hits show to boot (of course, every Maiden show is!). I have tickets with three other friends.
Su 8/18 - Boyz II Men @ Rocksino. I'm totally playing this on my show.
Su 8/18 - The Alarm w/Modern English @ HOB. Always nice to have an excuse to play early 80s music on my show.
T 8/20 - Robert Earl Keen @ Beachland Ballroom. Once was enough for me, but The Road Goes on Forever, and the Party Never Ends!
W 8/21 - Jake Shimabukuro @ Kent Stage. The Hendrix of the ukulele.
R 8/22 - Cary & the Dissidents @ MBSC. My friend Don is the drummer, and I like it way better than his terrible Dead cover band. Hi Don!
R 8/29 - Mac Sabbath w/Okilly Dokilly @ Beachland Ballroom. Heavy metal McDonalds songs preceded by Heavy Metal Simpsons references. And yes, there are also heavy metal Star Wars, DC/Marvel and no doubt other bands.

September
R 9/05 - Titus Andronicus @ Now That's Class. They're loud and great and I havne't seen them.
S 9/07 - Glen Hansard @ Agora Theatre (sponsored Beachland). Of The Frames and the Swell Season and the Once soundtrack.
W 9/11 - Bob Mould @ MBCH. I'm not sure why he's not at the Beachland again, but his last album was pretty good.
R 9/12 - Massive Attack @ Masonic Temple (Detroit). Rescheduled from March.
F 9/13 The Selecter @ Kent Stage. Pauline Black is there, so it's legit enough for me. It's rare that anyway from the second wave of ska comes around, so I may have to go.
F 9/13 - Raveena @ Grog Shop. R&B. Possible for my show.
Su 9/15 - Pelican @ Grog Shop. Sludgy metal. I have one friend (at least) who really likes them.
Su 9/15 - Rufus Wainwright w/Lucy Wainwright Roche @ MBCH. He's kind of fabulous.
R 9/19 - Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band @ Kent Stage. Perpetual favorite of mine. Not enough to drive to Kent, but still, worth mentioning.
S 9/21 - Iris Dement @ Kent Stage. Roots.
S 9/21 - Indigo Girls @ Akron Civic. One-time singer-songwriter stars.
Su 9/22 - Berlin @ HOB. With all the hits from Top Gun :-)
T 9/24 - The Blasters @ Beachland Ballroom. Oh look, it's Dave Alvin again.
T 9/24 - Andrew Bird @ Cleveland Masonic. A long time fixture on my perpetually growing list of people I need to see one day.
R 9/26 - Southern Culture On The Skids @ Beachland Ballroom. Some things never change. SCOTS is one of them.
M 9/30 - The Black Keys @ Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse (aka, The Q, Aka Gund) - I reserve judgment until I hear the new album.

October
W 10/02 - Melvins @ Grog Shop.
R 10/03 - Stereolab @ The Majestic (Detroit).
Su 10/06 - Igor and the Red Elvises @ Beachland Tavern. Siberian surf rock! A really long time ago I had a listener named Andrea who was a student at the law school who kept calling me during my radio show and we ended up going on a date to see the Red Elvises, except I didn't really realize it was a date because I'm sort of oblivious, and she stopped calling the show and ended being an attorney in California or something. Anyway it was a fun gig. I wonder if Jon still has the Red Elvises "Better Than Sex" bowling shirt I got him.
Su 10/06 - Mike Watt + The Missingmen @ Grog Shop. ex-Minutemen, obviously. Sometimes, punks live to be old punks.
W 10/16 - Mudhoney w/Kid Congo Powers @ Grog Shop. Heavy rock. Were great when I saw them.
Su 10/20 - Herb Alpert @ Rocksino. I'm morbidly curious.
T 10/22 - That 1 Guy @ Beachland Tavern. He looks weird enough to be interesting, what with his invented instruments and such.
W 10/23 - Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi @ Kent Stage. She just put out a new album. I learned this in media coverage in Smithsonion magazine, which means I'd be the youngest person at this show by five miles or so. Doesn't make it less good.
R 10/24 - Los Straitjackets @ Beachland Ballroom. The best surf rock played by guys in luchador masks that you'll ever see. Everybody who says they look rock and roll should see them at least once.
F 10/25 - Mike Doughty @ Beachland Ballroom. Playing all of Ruby Vroom, because we're all old and he's got bills to pay.
T 10/29 - Postmodern Jukebox @ Agora Theatre. Moving up to a bigger room.
R 10/31 - Rasputina @ Beachland Ballroom. Weird gothy cell rock. I've seen them twice.

November
F 11/1 - The Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Yusa and Special Guests @ Kent Stage. Capitalizing on their recent trip to Cuba.
M 11/11 - Elton John @ Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. If it wasn't so damn expensive, but it is.
F 11/29 & S 11/30 - Guided by Voices @ Grog Shop. Well, that'll sell out.

December
Su 12/15 - Straight No Chaser @ PSQ. One day, I'll see their a cappella stylings.
