Ok, so that's not what Shakespeare
wrote, but he probably liked a good cconcert, and it's been three months and
ten shows since the
last iteration of the concert calendar. At least it takes less time to check all the outdoor venues in December!
As is traditional, means I'm going and means I'm strongly considering it, and I always love hearing about shows I missed, particularly ones in cities outside Cleveland that I may not be checking closely.
December
F 12/07 - Ghost Light @ Beachland Ballroom. My colleague Amanda recommends them as a jam band super group.
F 12/07 - Wesley Bright & the Honeytones @ Happy Dog. Soul. Record release party!
S 12/08 - Jeffrey Osborne @ Wolstein Center. Rescheduled date from September.
W 12/12 - Frode Gjerstad @ Bop Stop. Scandinavian free jazz.
12/12 through 12/26 - CityMusic Cleveland @ Various Locations.
S 12/15 - This Moment in Black History @ Beachland Ballroom. Arguably the best band in Cleveland. Definitely free show!
Su 12/16 - Straight No Chaser @ PSQ. Acapella. I'd like to see them in a non-Xmas show, but apparently that's not an option.
F 12/21 - Jessica Lea Mayfield @ Beachland Ballroom. It's been more than ten years since I saw
the pride of Kent at the Beachland Tavern. Since then she hasn't gotten dramatically more popular, but the music is still good.
S 12/22 - Mannheim Steamroller @ PSQ. One of my mother's favorites when I was growing up.
F 12/28 - Turkuaz @ HOB. Sponsored by Beachland. Funky. I wasn't blown away when I saw them in
2014, but I will be giving away tickets to see them on my show.
January
W 1/02 - Remember Sports @ Beachland Tavern. Indie rock from Kenyon and Philadelphia. I'm pretty sure my friend Ed recommends them.
R 1/03 - Wesley Bright & the Honeytones @ Mahall's. Soul. I've got tickets to give away to this show.
R 1/03 - Fred Eaglesmith @ Beachland Tavern. I see Fred every few years for a tuneup of country and cynicism.
F 1/04 - T-Rextasy @ Beachland Tavern. $12 bet on an all-women punkish outfit described as 'hyperverbal.'
Su 1/06 - Martin Sexton w/Chris Trapper @ MBCH. Canadian folk rock that I used to like.
F 1/11 - Book of Love @ Beachland Ballroom. Another example of a band that was reasonably well known that I have somehow never heard of. To be fair, they
weren't in the Encyclopedia.
F 1/11 - Sublime With Rome @ Rocksino. Is not the same thing as Sublime. Posthumously reunited bands are so disappointing!
W 1/16 - Twisted Pine @ Beachland Tavern. $10 bet on a rising folk/pop group.
F 1/18 - Into The Blue: Grateful Dead Revival @ Beachland Ballroom. You all know how I feel about the Dead, but my colleague Don is the drummer for these guys, and aside from the jam band thing he has great taste in music, so here's a shout out.
February
F 2/01 - Metallica @ The Q. I decided it was too expensive.
F 2/09 - Here Come the Mummies @ HOB. Funk played by guys disguised as mummies. Ok, why not?
Su 2/10 - Davina & The Vagabonds @ Beachland Ballroom. They name check a lot of older bands and genres that I like, so I need to listen to them some to form an opinion.
R 2/14 - Cowboy Mouth w/Nathan & the Zydeco Cha-Chas @ Kent Stage. New Orleans rock and zydeco bands in the run up to Mardi Gras.
R 2/14 - Lalah Hathaway w/Raheem Devaughn @ PSQ. Modern soul that fits perfectly on my radio show.
S 2/16 - John Cusak + High Fidelity @ Akron Civic. Watch the one of the best movies
about music (and a personal favorite soundtrack of mine) followed by Q&A with its star.
M 2/18 - Deerhunter @ Mahalls. Rock. Weirdos. Hard to describe.
T 2/19 - Kandace Springs @ MBCH. Up and coming jazz singer.
T 2/19 - Mostly Other People do the Killing @ Bop Stop. Jazz quartet.
F 2/22 - Cherry Glazer @ Grog Shop. It's been two years since I
saw them, which I assume means there's another album of rock & roll goodness arriving soon.
Su 2/24 - The David Bowie Alumni Tour @ Agora Theatre. Maybe my Bowie loving friend Colleen will come visit me for this :-)
W 2/27 - Disney's Dicapella @ PSQ. Disney acapella. Listed for all the Disney Princess's in my life. You know who you are.
March
F 3/01 - Los Lobos @ MBCH. The Wolf will survive by playing very pricey gigs!
T 3/05 - The Beths @ Beachland Ballroom. New Zealand indie rock goodness. I liked them when I saw them
in October and you will too. Unless you hate indie rock, in which case I guess you won't.
F 3/08 - Aya Nishina @ CMA. Composer & sound artist. Worked with John Zorn.
3/13 through 3/17 - CityMusic Cleveland @ Various Locations
F 3/22 - Massive Attack @ Masonic Temple Detroit. I am strongly considering this.t
W 3/27 - 2 Cellos @ The Q. I'll happily take an excuse to play their stuff on my show, but
once was enough for me.
April
Su 4/07 - Carlene Carter @ MBCH. One of the Cash/Carter music family. I liked her when I
saw her.
W 4/10 - Avi Avital with Omer Avital @ CMA. Jazz quartet with an oud.
F 4/12 - The Drifters, Cornell Gunter's Coasters & The Platters @ Akron Civic. Current lineups of classic doo-wop bands certainly is an excuse to play them on my show.
Su 4/14 - Black Violin @ PSQ. Classical & Hip-hop and steadily larger rooms on each tour.
T 4/16 - Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers @ Grog Shop. The Against Me! frontwoman has a solo tour. I'm sure this will sell out.
W 4/17 - The Spring Quartet @ Finney Chapel. Jazz with Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano on tenor sax, Esperanza Spalding on bass/vocals, and Leo Genovese. I have tickets.
R 4/18 - Dave Davies @ MBCH. Of the Kinks. I have two friends who will be excited, except they already know, I'm sure.
M 4/22 - Neko Case @ The Majestic Detroit. Monday night road trip concerts are rough, but I missed her last year.
May
Su 5/05 and M 5/06 - Todd Rundgren @ PSQ. I have a friend who is a very obsessed fan.
W 5/08 - Cenk Ergün @ CMA. Composer and sound artist.
F 5/10 - KT Tunstall @ Beachland Ballroom. Rescheduled from November.
5/15 through 5/19 - CityMusic Cleveland @ Various Locations
F 5/23 - Nashville Pussy & Guitar Wolf @ Beachland Ballroom. I saw
N.P. way back in 2004 and
Guitar Wolf in 2016. Both are very loud rock and roll, and fun.
June and Beyond
6/27 to 6/29 - Tri-C JazzFest @ (presumed) PSQ. Lineups TBA.
S 8/17 - Iron Maiden @ PPG Paints Area Pittsburgh. Up the Irons! I have tickets.
M 11/11 - Elton John @ The Q. Ok, he is coming back after all. I may have to spring for this.
