My Schedule for the 42nd Cleveland International Film Festival (2018)

Mar 23, 2018 00:07

Due to several schedule conflicts of longstanding nature, I have only purchased tickets to four movies for this year's Cleveland International Film Festival. There's a chance that I'll purchase some more, particularly for the first Saturday, or a one off on the Monday or Tuesday, but for the moment this is all I have purchased. I've also included my conflicts for those interested, as well as the two films M has tickets for that I cannot make.

Friday, April 6 @ 4:10pm. Indians home opener.

Saturday, April 7 @ 2:10pm - The King - A documentary that uses Elvis and a road trip across America to talk about capitalism, with assorted musician and celebrity talking heads.

Saturday, April 7 @ 4:10pm - Fail State - A documentary about for profit colleges. Produced by Dan Rather. M is also going.

Wednesday, April 11 @ 8:40pm - Five Fingers for Marseille - A western, more or less, set in South Africa.

Friday, April 13 @ 7:40pm - Kusama - Infinity - M will be at this. I will be at the Mountain Goats at the Beachland.

Saturday, April 14 @ 11:15am - Won't You Be My Neighbor - A documentary about Mr. Rogers. M is also going.

Saturday, April 14 @ 7pm - I'll be at the Cinematheque to see the documentary Gaudi.

Sunday, April 15 @ 12:45pm - RBG - M will be at this. I'll be at the radio station.

Four would be the fewest CIFF films I'd seen in years. A few others I'm considering but not yet pulling the trigger on include:

Thursday, April 5 @ 6:30pm - An Act of Defiance - Dramatization of a scene from the life of Nelson Mandela.

Thursday, April 5 @ 9:05pm - The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful - Taiwanese mob film.

Saturday, April 7 @ 11:15pm - V.I.P. - This year's South Korean thriller!

Monday, April 9 @ 9:30pm - DRIB - Let me just quote the entire blurb: "Comedian and performance artist Amir Asgharnejad was known online for his viral videos of provoking fights with strangers and other outrageous public stunts. After he caught the attention of an advertising agency, the creative directors formed a campaign around Amir and his virtual persona. Looking to market their product as edgy and dangerous, they positioned Amir to become the new face of a well-known energy drink-before things started to fall apart. DRIB is a meta-cinematic recreation of these bizarre yet true events, with Amir playing himself. A mix of interviews, reenactments, and creative control issues between Amir and the film’s director, DRIB is a hilarious satire that deconstructs corporate culture and advertising. To avoid a lawsuit, the filmmakers created their own energy drink “DRIB” to stand in place of the real brand. To further highlight the ridiculousness of the entire situation, “DRIB” is continuously advertised throughout the film, and to be honest, it looks awesome."

Tuesday, April 10 @ 7:35pm - Anote's Ark - This year's environmental documentary, about Kiribati's fight against rising ocean levels.

Thursday, April 12 @ 9:30pm - ACORN & the Firestorm - Documentary about the fall of ACORN to cleverly edited videos.

Thursday, April 12 @ 9:25pm - Scotch: A Golden Dream - Yep, a documentary about scotch.

It's unlikely that I'll go to more than 2 or 3 of these, and some may be game day decisions.
