I haven't run a 5K since I ran my company's race in
2014, but I figured that this year I'd at least run my company's 5K again. I'm not doing any running, and biking hasn't been consistent due to weather and schedule, so the only cardio I'm getting is CrossFit. Throw in some cold, windy weather and I was not at all surprised that I ran my worst 5K time since I started keeping track in with a
35:15 chip time (35:37 gun).
My only goal was to beat at least one pace runner. Since the last pacer was a 12 minute mile pace, I succeeded with an 11:22/mile pace. My split at mile one was 11:02. My second mile split was 23:17. Due to foot pain, I walked some the second mile and rather a lot the third mile, but I did have enough in the tank to sprint the last 100 meters and pass a bunch of people. Most notably, my coworker JV told me she tried to catch me in 2014 and failed, so when I saw her just in front of me at the end I turned on the jets (such as they are) and caught her in the last 20 meters.
Interestingly, in the aftermath my knee feels fine and my feet hurt. Ok, that I expected based on the race itself and past history, but why the heck do my hips hurt?
