House 2015

Dec 10, 2015 22:27

Where in I document a few minor things I got one on my house in 2015 so I can refer to it in the future. I know, not very exciting. Sorry.

1. In May, I had the water damage in the eave on my garage by the simple expedient of having the awning removed.

2. Removing the awning took my garage light with it. In November when it started getting dark I had an electrician install a new one.

3. I had the dampers in the chimney replaced in May.

4. Earlier this week I got a new garbage disposal installed. This was necessary because a cheese knife slid down the disposal unbeknownst to me, and... well, I probably don't need to explain much further than that. The plumber told me that he could take two hours and maybe fix my old disposal by taking it fully apart, or he could put in a new one in an hour, which was actually cheaper because of the price differential between a new disposal and an extra hour of labor. As a bonus, my new disposal is more powerful (1/2 HP, up from 1/3 HP). The plumber was impressed that I'd gotten a disposal to last at least 8 years (it was there when I bought the house). Interestingly, I would have guessed that disposals normally break because somebody accidentally puts something inappropriate down it, as I did. The plumber told me that almost never happens. Usually he said he is called out for ones that break because people intentionally put something down it that it's not designed for. So now you know.

5. And I can't remember if this was last fall or last spring, but I got a new screen door on my kitchen door. This was occasioned by the door knob falling off. Since it didn't actually have a screen and didn't seal properly, it was an obvious choice.
