Due to a ridiculous pile of conflicts, I'm only going to make it to a few films at this year's Cleveland International Film Festival. For those interested, here the ones I'm going to. I've got tickets unless otherwise noted.
Thursday, April 4
Musicwood - 7:35pm. A documentary about the wood used to make guitars.
United in Anger: A History of Act Up - 9:15pm. The title is self-explanatory. Act Up! Fight AIDS!
Saturday 4/06
Caesar Must Die - 11:15am. Julius Caesar, set and filmed in a maximum security prison with prisoners as the characters.
Renoir - 1:15pm - No ticket, on standby. Character study of Renoir late in his life.
Detroit Unleaded - 3:50pm - No ticket, on standby. Romantic comedy set in Detroit's Arab-American community.
The Last Ocean - 8:50pm. Documentary on the Ross Sea.
Saturday 4/13
Casting By - 1:20pm - Documentary about casting agents.
Iceberg Slim - 3:45pm - Documentary on the infamous pimp and author.
What about the other days, I hear you ask. Well, this is what my calendar looks like for the next ten days.
Friday 4/05 - The Cinematheque always books some good stuff during the CIFF. I'm definitely seeing
Samsara at 9:40. By the guy who directed
Baraka and was cinematographer for
Koyannisqatsi, so you can see why I'm eager to see it. I may also go in for
Picnic at Hanging Rock at 7:30.
Sunday 4/07 - Radio show, then Esperanza Spalding with
gieves.
Monday 4/08 - Indians Home Opener @ 4:05pm
Tuesday 4/09 - I'm really strongly considering driving to Oberlin to see Marnie Stern in concert.
Wednesday 4/10 - Not a damn thing, but I'm giving blood that day so I'm not booking anything.
Thursday 4/11 - Carmina Burana as performed by The Cleveland Orchestra with
gieves.
Friday 4/12 - More Cinematheque, in particular
High and Low at 9:25pm, a Kurosawa film I have not yet seen starring Mifune, Nakadai AND Shimura. I can't miss that.
Saturday 4/13 - In addition to the CIFF movies, I'm going to see
Walker at 7:30pm at the Cinematheque.
And I haven't even mentioned that the WRUW Telethon runs from Monday April 8 to Sunday April 14, so I need to get ready for that in preparation for a full day at the station on Sunday the 14th. And of course, I still need to take spoil Tulip rotten that week. So yeah, I'll settle for eight CIFF movies and be happy to have that.
