I have an attic fan which is set on a thermostat, currently it goes on when the attic hits 110. Effectively, this means it is on all the time once summer comes along (or spring, this year). I'm not sure how much it helps the temperature inside the house since my attic is very well insulated, but reducing the attic heat also apparently helps keep the roof intact longer.

As to the wall units, I checked them out. They are UGLY. I mean, really UGLY. And unfortunately, the one room I really need A/C in, the kitchen, doesn't have a big enough piece of unblocked exterior wall thanks to cupboards, windows and the like, so I can't use it in there. I may still consider them, but they're ugly enough that they'd bug me every time I saw them.

The attic fan only sucks air out of the attic, right?

You may want to try a whole-house fan:

Even (relatively) brand new homes cause this feeling...
