The 27th and presumably final show that I saw this year was
DJ Shadow, who played the HOB. He had a magnificent sound & light show; in any normal year it would set the gold standard, but since I got to see
The Wall this year it'll have to settle for second place. There was a long screen at the back of the stage and a small sphere at the front of the stage. This sphere was the Shadow-Sphere; DJ Shadow entered it from behind and had all of his decks and gear inside of it. At some points in the show he would spin the edge of the sphere around so that the audience could see him. For the remainder it served as a small screen which was used to provide a second level to the projections. For example, at one point a chainsaw was projected on the back screen and it cut the sphere screen in half. The Shadow-Sphere became the Death Star and blew something up. At other times it had a projection from a webcam inside the sphere. In any event, it was a pretty sweet a/v setup, which combined with the predictably excellent music means that I had a very good time.
I got comped, which means that the $$/show ratio for the year ends at $3.07/show. When you consider that I routinely spend more than that on cheese, this was not too shabby at all, even if it doesn't include the occasional adult beverage and some CDs.
